Brantingham, Schaeffer qualify for regionals
Monacan's Matt Brantingham (73) and Eric Schaeffer (76) qualified individually for next week's Central Region tournament. But the Chief's failed to qualify as a team, finishing fourth. All players on the top two teams (Clover Hill, Midlothian), plus the top six other players advanced.
James River's Josh Nelson (70) won the individual title, followed by Clover Hill's Mike Chupka (71), Brantingham (73), Midlothian's John Rosenstock and Jason Reed (74 each), C.H.'s Chris Menster (75), Schaeffer (75), C.H.'s Brandon Holloway (76), and J.R.'s Nick Bacon (76).
Monacan's team scoring included Brantingham, Schaeffer, Mike Latimer (82) and Paul Lowery (86).

Brantingham, Schaeffer qualify for states
Day 2. Monacan's two entries, Matt Brantingham and Eric Schaeffer, both qualified for next week's state championships. Brantingham fired a 1-under par 71 to give him a two-day total of 147, good for sixth place in individual scoring. Schaeffer shot an even-par 72 for a total of 150, good for ninth.
The regional tournament's top two teams -- Clover Hill and Douglas Freeman -- qualified for states. So did the top six individual players not on those teams. Monacan's team had not qualified for the regional tournament.

Brantingham, Schaeffer shoot 74s in states
Matt Brantingham and Eric Schaeffer of Monacan both shot four-over-par 74s in the opening round of the Virginia High School League Group AAA golf tournment. Each is nine strokes behind first-round leader Jenny Suh of Chantilly, who shot a five-under 65. (Under VHSL guidelines, girls play at 80 percent of the length the boys play.) Brantingham and Schaeffer are tied for fifth among 18 Central Region golfers and somewhere outside the top dozen in the statewide competition.
In team compeition, Western Branch leads with a 289. The two Central Region teams -- Clover Hill (298) and Douglas Freeman (308) are fourth and seventh, respecitively, among the eight participating teams. Monacan, which finished third in the state last year behind the play of Jackie Beers, did not qualify for the states this year.
Both Brantingham and Schaeffer were named All-Central Region and Central Region All-Academic. |

| Brantingham, Schaeffer finish well in states
Monacan's Matt Brantingham and Eric Schaeffer held their own in the final round of the Group AAA State Golf Championship. Playing on a cold, windy day that saw most scores sore, Brantingham added a 77 to his opening round 74, while Schaeffer added a 78 to his opening 74. The two finished 11 and 12 strokes, respectively, back of the winner, Jenny Suh of Chantilly.
Suh became the first girl to win the state championship. Monacan's Jackie Beers had almost done so last year, tying for the championship but losing in a playoff. Under VHSL rules, girls compete with boys, playing at 80 percent of the distance.
Western Branch won the state team championship. Clover Hill of the Dominion District was second. Monacan, which was third in last year's state championship, did not qualify as a team this year.
