| 2 | Central Region Day 2 |
at Belmont G.C. |
It is for Monacan and Douglas Freeman, anyway. Those teams advanced to the Group AAA tournament at Evergreen in Haymarket Oct. 10-11 after recording the two lowest scores at Stonehenge Golf Course yesterday. The Chiefs took the Central Region championship with a two-day score of 608. It was Monacan's first region title. Monacan senior Jackie Beers posted the top individual score, a 144. Even more exciting to her is the chance to play the state tournament with the rest of her team. "I think it's going to help everybody's play as well as mine to go to state as a team," Beers said, "It's good when you're all out there together, rooting as a team." Monacan coach Bill Carloni agreed. "It's quite a boost for morale. This is the first time I've ever done it as a coach," Carloni said. Beers was the only Monacan golfer to advance past the region level last season. Freeman ended the day as it started it - one stroke off the lead. The Rebels totaled 609. "Most of these kids have not had the chance to compete in a team sport before," Freeman coach Drew Bright said. "You realize that that shot you're going to make now not only affects your score, but your team's score." Freeman's Hunter Bendall, who took Central Region player-of-the-year honors, was primarily responsible for keeping the team in the running on the first day of the tournament by shooting 1-over-par 72. The second day was a different story. No. 3 player Matt Summers shot a 71. "What pleases me most is that we all participated today," Bright said. Aside from Beers and Bendall, the top six individuals from the Central Region tournament also advanced to the state championship. State qualifiers are Dinwiddie's Daryl Chappell, Thomas Dale's B.K. Kelley, Maggie Walker Governor's School's John Berry, Atlee's Daniel Tomlin, L.C. Bird's Alex Brown and Mills Godwin's Scott Guza. But the tournament's big winner - individually, at least - was Beers, whose play set the tone for the rest of the Monacan team. "They played very consistently," Carloni said, "I'm happy that we didn't sneak in the back way. We won because we played well."
Team scores - 1. MONACAN 309-299-608; 2. Douglas Freeman 310-299-609; 3. Clover Hill 309-304-613; 4. Atlee 314-312-626; 5. Prince George 329-312-641; 6. Mills Godwin 333-310-643; 7. Colonial Heights 324-328-652; 8. Highland Springs 391-DQ
