W 28-6 |
Monacan, ranked No. 3 in the Metro area by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, gets 241 yards rushing from Mark Parson, 75 yards passing from Michael Graham and strong defensive plays including two goal-line stands inside the 5-yard line.
Chiefs jumped out to a 21-0 lead with three big scoring plays on their first three possessions: a 27-yard pass from Graham to Brandon McRae, a 56-yard run by Parson, and -- less than five minutes into the second quarter -- an 11-yard pass to McRae.
Godwin, behind the passing of Justin Bristow (18 of 32 for 210 yards), kept moving the ball. The Eagles drove to Monacan's 4-yard-line late in the first half but Bristow's fourth-down pass was incomplete. Godwin drove to Monacan's 5 in the fourth quarter but there the drive stalled. "In the heat of the moment, we knew we had to stop them," linebacker Shawn Dickerson told the Richmond Times-Dispatch after the game. "We're an experienced team. There're no excuses that our job can't be done on the field."
Parson sealed the victory with a 95-yard touchdown run in the fourth. "We have all our linemen back," Parson told the newspaper. "We've been in the weight room all summer working on our speed. That's the difference this year.
Coach Keith Daniels told the Times-Dispatch: "I think this team is on a mission. We came up a little short last year, and we've been preaching all along that you can't slip up in Division 6."

HUGUENOT (No. 10 in Metro) |
W 12-0 |
No. 3-ranked Chiefs (4-0, 2-0 Dominion District) stay undefeated and tied atop the district with win over the No. 10 Falcons.
Monacan goes up 9-0 on a 9-yard touchdown from workhorse Mark Parson, who rushes for 173 yards on 29 carries. The score comes the play after Brandon McRae makes a leaping catch of Michael Graham's 24-yard pass.
Kicker Travis Wilson also is key, landing a first-quarter punt at the 3-yard line that sets up a safety, and kicking a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Monacan's defense proves the game-decider, though, recording a first-quarter safety, adding an interception, stopping the Falcons after they recovered a fumbled punt on Monacan's 42, and then preserving the shutout in the final minutes when Huguenot gets as close as the Chief's 16-yard-line.
The win leaves three teams tied atop the district with 2-0 records: Monacan, George Wythe (next week's opponent), and Manchester (a surprising 14-7 winner over L.C. Bird. Only the district winner is assured of making the playoffs.

GEORGE WYTHE |
W 54-28 |
Both teams came into Monacan's Homecoming with perfect 4-0 records, tied atop the Dominion District (with Manchester) at 2-0. Three plays into the game, the unranked Bulldogs take a 6-0 lead on a 76-yard pass play. But No. 3-ranked Chiefs respond behind the running of Mark Parson to score the next five touchdowns and seemingly lock up the game in the first half.
Wythe stays competitive, though, behind the passing and scrambling of quarterback Jerome Choice, who throws for 334 yards and runs for two scores. But Monacan has enough big plays of its own to retain control of the game.
Parson finishes with 170 yards 4 touchdowns rushing; he adds a TD on a punt return. Meanwhile, Chiefs pick off four of Choice's passes, returning two for tuchdowns (by Chris Cappa and Tyrone Sharpe). Kadero Watson adds 62 years rushing on just 7 carries.
Win keeps Monacan (now 5-0 overall) tied atop the district with Manchester, at 3-0.
Coach Keith Daniels tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch his team never really finished off the game: "You play a game like this, and you get a lot of negative vibes. You score 54 points, and you've got to be pretty happy." Defenisve lineman Shaeron Whittington adds: "We haven't played the way we're capable of playing yet. We always play a half or three quarters, but we haven't played up to our full potential." Parson tells the paper: "We have little spurts, but we haven't played a complete game yet. We'll take it. We hear a lot of people talking about us, that we can't beat people out of the district. That fuels us. We want to show people we can do it."

MIDLOTHIAN |
W 46-0 |
Easy win for the No. 2-ranked Chiefs (6-0, 4-0 Dominion District) against their traditional rival. Midlothian (0-6, 0-4), which has been shut out four times, manage only 143 yards against the Chiefs, who were led by Shawn Dickerson's 15 tackles. Mark Parson, the area's second-leading rusher coming into the game, and Chris Cappa each score twice in limited duty.
Win keeps Monacan on track for big games with Bird and Manchester. Those likely will decide the district champion/playoff representative.

L.C. BIRD (No. 10 in Metro) |
L 13-14 |
What seemed to be the play of the year comes to nought as No. 10 L.C. Bird upsets the No. 2 Chiefs 14-13 in a defensive struggle by blocking an extra point with 2 minutes remaining.
Monacan trailed 14-7 at halftime, giving up two big touchdown plays (25-yard run and 27-yard-pass, the latter following a long interception return), although otherwise playing good defense. Chiefs had scored once themselves on a 26-yard pass from Michael Graham to Cordero Watson.
Monacan took the second-half kickoff and, beginning on its 20-yard-line, went 6:55 and 77 yards to the Skyhawk 3-yard-line. But great scoring opportunities were lost when Monacan lost fumbles on back-to-back possessions, the first on the 1-yard-line, the second on the 10-yard line.
Bird's only sustained second-half drive brought it to a game-clinching field goal attempt with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game. But Shawn Dickerson blocked the attempt and Chris Cappa picked up the ball and ran 74 yards for a touchdown, turning the apprehensive Monacan crowd euphoric. The Chiefs apparently were on their way to sending the game into overtime. But Bird's clean block by a player coming from the right side left the score at 14-13. Bird then recovered Monacan's onside kick attempt and ran out the clock.
Loss muddies the playoff picture for the Chiefs: Manchester (5-0), Monacan (4-1) and Bird (4-1) are all in contention for what may be only one District 6 playoff spot in the Dominion District. Monacan and Manchester play Nov. 7.

Chiefs, who fell from No. 2 to No. 5 following last week's loss to Bird, find themselves having to win out to keep alive a shot at the playoffs -- and take the first step at Clover Hill.
Cavaliers score the opening touchdown. But Monacan takes control after that, despite giving up a 90-yard kick return late in the first half. Mark Parson runs for 179 yards and 3 TDs on 27 carries, also catches 3 passes from Michael Graham for 50 yards and another TD. On defense, Ryan Freeman makes 2 interceptions to go with his 9 tackles.
Win sets up a huge game next week at Manchester. Winner will have the inside track to the Dominion District title and what may be the district's only Division 6 playoff spot. Records of the contenders: Manchester (7-1, 6-0 district), Monacan (7-1, 5-1), Bird (6-2, 5-1).

at Manchester (No. 7 in Metro) |
W 34-20 |
No. 5-ranked Monacan earns a three-way share of the Dominion District title, defeating No. 7 Manchester 34-20 and keeping the Chiefs' playoff hopes alive. Important game was played before a huge crowd (6-8,000, perhaps?). Many could not even get into the parking lot and into the game until near the end of the first quarter.
Chiefs seemed to recover an onside kick to open the game but were penalized for not allowing the Manchester player to make a fair catch of the pop-up kick (high school rule is different than college and pro). Minutes later, an early fumble put Monacan in a deeper hole and eventually Manchester went up 7-0. Chiefs retaliated on next drive, with Mark Parson's 38- and 26-yard runs late in the first quarter setting up his short touchdown run early in the second.
Michael Graham's passes led them to a second score. In one of the games most dramatic plays, Graham hit Shawn Dickerson (linebacker who now also plays receiver) across the middle for about a 20-yard game. Dickerson, reaching for the ball, was leveled by a defensive back's ferocious hit and Dickerson went airborne. But he popped to his feat, signaled first down and the Chiefs were on their way. On the next play, Graham hit Brandon McRae for a 17-yard score. Graham would end the night with 6-for-12 passing for 100 yards and two scores; Monacan receivers, however, dropped another three or four of his passes.
Parson, meanwhile, was piling up the yardage behind Monacan's big offense line. For the game, Parson had eight runs of 10 yards or more -- and a total of 236 on 28 carries. His 38-yard score early in the second half put the Chiefs up 21-7 and momentairly seemed to get the game under control. The Lances immediately countered with a 79-yard scoring run. But Chris Cappa's 44-yard TD run and Ryan Holston's 9-yard TD pass reception did lock up the game.
"The offensive line is mostly seniors. They are supposed to be good. And they are good," Monacan coach Keith Daniels told the Richmond Times-Dispatch after ghe game. "When they come to play they are pretty daggone tough. They are as good an offensive line as we've had at Monacan. I can't say enough about them. When they get serious they're tough. "When you have a back like Parson, and have a back like Cappa behind him . . . they are fun to watch."
Manchester coach Tom Hall told the paper. "(Parson) made the plays. He was definitely the difference in this game. I thought the Monacan staff did an excellent job. Mark just has great vision. He made most of his runs cutting back. Normally our strong part was not our strong part tonight, and that's our defense. I give all the credit to Monacan. They are an excellent football team and they are going to represent our district well."
Monacan (8-1, 6-1 Dominion District), Manchester (7-2, 6-1) all earned a part of the championship. It was Monacan's first since 1990. Which team will go the Central Region playoffs will be decided by non-district games the final Friday of the season.

PRINCE GEORGE |
W 38-0 |
Monacan blanks Prince George 38-0 to finish 9-1 and nonethless gets shut out of the Central Region District 6 playoffs. L.C. Bird, 8-2, which defeated Monacan by a point in the regular season, edges out the Chiefs for the Dominion District's championship spot in the four-team field, under the Virginia High School League new ratings. Under last year's system, Monacan would have gotten the spot. Chiefs, ranked No. 3 in the most-recent Times-Dispatch rankings, will have to watch as No. 2 Varina (9-1), No. 4 Highland Springs (9-1), No. 6 Mills Godwin (8-2) and No. 9 Bird (8-2) compete for the Central Region title.
Game, postponed from Sept. 19 by Hurricane Isabel, was played as Senior Night.
After a scoreless first quarter, Monacan effectively wrapped up the game with 25 unanswered points in the second. Mark Parson finished with 113 yards on 23 carries, setting a single-season Monacan rushing record with 1,578 yards. Donnell Hargrove set another school record with an 83-yard interception return for a score. Shawn Dickerson had a 62-yard interception for another, along with 14 tackles.
Skyhawks, Springers get in; Varina, Mills Godwin also will be playing in Division 6 playoffs (Richmond Times-Dispatch , 11/15).

POST-SEASON COMMENTS: Getting extra points for scheduling tougher teams -- even if you lose -- was the intent of the new Virginia High School League ratings plan, which kept 9-1 Monacan out of the playoffs in favor of 8-2 L.C. Bird, its creator told the Times-Dispatch. ('Monacan-Bird case is called an example of the ratings' intent', 11/19.) Monacan coach Keith Daniels says, "I understand where they're coming from, but it comes at a bad time for my kids. We're as good a football team as anybody in this region - and everybody knows it. But I've got 44 kids who'll never get that chance."
Varina coach Gary Chilcoat agreed, telling the paper: "Physically and talentwise, the best team is not in the playoffs, and that's Monacan. That's not taking anything away from Bird. We did not want to play [Monacan] in the first round. The [architect of the rating system] can say all he wants, but I don't think the system works." ('Bird wants to capitalize on new rule' that kept Monacan out, 11/20.) Coincidentally, Varina and Bird would go on to meet in the regional finals -- where Bird won 14-13, the same score by which it gave Monacan its only loss. |

Preview
Richmond Times-Dispatch
Aug. 29, 2003
Coach: Keith Daniels
2002: 5-2, 7-3
Offense: Mark Parson ran for 85.9 yards per game last season, and he's back, along with QB Michael Graham, RB Shaeron Whittington, WR Brandon McRae and TE Ryan Holston. Linemen William Randolph (6-1, 265), Bryan Kelly (6-6, 300) and Eric Turner (6-0, 250) lend size and experience.
Defense: Randolph, a first-team All-Metro defensive lineman, and Shawn Dickerson, a second-team linebacker, headline an experienced cast. Holston (6-5, 230), an end, is a college prospect. Adam Burgess and Brian Buford complete the front wall. Chris Kappa joins Dickerson at linebacker, with Tyrone Sharpe and Parson back as the safeties.
Prognosis: Chiefs were on the playoff cusp last season - two of the three losses were by a TD or less - and making it this year is the logical step. They've got speed and size and almost everybody back in a senior-dominated lineup. As with the other Division 6 playoff contenders, there isn't much room for a slip-up.
