  5 MILLS GODWIN
(No. 10 in metro)
W 14-7 Thanks to defense and a solid ground game, along with a few key plays, Monacan's No. 9-ranked Chiefs defeat Mills Godwin in a matchup of top 10 teams. Game originally scheduled for Godwin but played at Monacan following a delay in a fence being put up. Godwin of the Colonial District opened game with an eight-play drive that gained 42 yards but ended when Tyrone Sharpe recovered a fumble for Monacan. Chiefs countered with a touchdown drive that included a 25-yard run by Doren Brown and a 10-yard Michael-Graham-to-Marcus Murrell scoring pass. Brown ended a Godwin drive in the second quarter with a diving interception at the Monacan 10-yard line and broke 53-yard punt return that helped set up his own 8-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Mark Parson's 89 yards of rushing behind Chiefs' big opffensive line helped keep the Eagles at bay. Godwin's only score came with 1:24 left. Monacan recovered Godwin's attempted onside kick to seal the game. In addition to Parson, both Brown and Shaeron Whittington also rushed for more than 50 yards.

13 VARINA
(No. 3 in Metro)
L 12-15 Monacan's No. 8-ranked Chiefs came within 1:19 of upsetting Varina's No. 3-ranked Blue Devils in a classic defensive game between two top teams. Varina of the Capital District scored early after a 91-yard drive aided by a pass intereference penalty. Monacan retaliated when Domonique Hargrove recovered a fumbled punt and Doren Brown ran 32 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown on the next play. The Blue Devils, however, blocked Monancan's point-after try. Monacan took the lead just before halftime, the big play being Mark Parson's catch of Michael T. Graham's pass a split-second after it was tipped by a Varina defender. The 42-yard play took the ball to the four and Graham scored moments later on a one-yard quarterback sneak. Monacan's two-point try was stopped. The second half turned into a defensive back-and-forth, with neither team seriously threatening. In the fourth quarter, Varina finally set on a long drive aided by two fourth-down conversions and an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Chiefs and scored with 1:19 in the game. Monacan, itself aided by an unsporsmanlike penalty against Varina (each team had two in the game), drove to Varina's 30 before running out of downs.

  4 MIDLOTHIAN
(No. 10 in Metro)
W 38-12 Combining an explosive ground game with a tough defense that did not allow an offensive score until the final three minutes, No. 7-ranked Monacan easily stops No. 10 Midlothian. Doren Brown gained 225 yards on just 11 carries, and had a 40-yard fumble return. All tolled, Brown had four runs of 40 yards or more (including the fumble return), three of which went for touchdowns. Brown's 52-yard TD run in the first quarter and fumble return early in the second put the Chiefs up 14-0. Midlothian -- voted Monacan's biggest rival by 68 percent of voters in last month's Chief Poll -- countered with a 62-yard fumble return for a defensive touchdown of its own. But a Mark Parsons touchdown and a Jordan Arnold field goal on the final play of the half (set up by Brown's 49-yard serpentine run) put the Chiefs up 24-6. Midlothian moved the ball well through the air to start the second half. But the Trojans' drive was ended at the 13 by a Marcus Easton interception. Moments later, Brown scored on a 75-yard sprint and the game was effectively over. The Chiefs gave up a long-drive TD late in the game, but Kordero Watson canceled that with a 58-yard sprint down the left sideline for a score. Led by Brown, Parsons and Watson -- who ran almost at will behind Monacan's big offensive line -- the Chiefs gained 393 yards on the ground. In addition to hitting the field goal, Arnold was five-for-five on extra points and put five of six kickoffs into the end zone.

12 GEORGE WYTHE W 34-6 Chiefs easily won their homecoming game, once it was played. Chiefs ground out 279 yards, led by Mark Parson's 157 on 14 carries. Doren Brown added 93 on 21 carries, with three touchdowns. Shaeron Whittington had the other two scores. Wythe did close to 20-6 with a third-quarter TD before the Chiefs put the game away. Brian Buford had nine tackles for Monacan, and Chris McWhirt added seven.
Game was moved to Saturday afternoon following the region-wide cancelation of outdoor activities Friday night. Decision by Richmond-area school superintendents followed the latest in a week-long series of sniper shootings in Northern Virginia, this one closer, in Massaponax, south of Fredericksburg. The continuing rain also was cited.
Monacan (3-0, 5-1) remains one of three teams undefeated in the Dominion District (Bird and Huguenot are the others). Win sets up Friday's big game at Bird (3-0, 5-1). Monacan and Bird are the prime contenders for what probably will be only one Division 6 spot for the district in the Central Region playoffs. Huguenot appears likely to gain a spot in the Central Region's Division 5 playoffs, regardless of how it does against the other two teams.

18 at L.C. Bird L 14-27 In a night of strong defenses and big plays, No. 6-ranked L.C. Bird has more of each and topples No. 7 Monacan. Win gives Bird a leg up on the Division 6 playoff spot that will come from the Dominion District. Monacan now will have to get help from someone.
Game started off badly for the Chiefs, who lost a fumble on a pitchout on their own 34-yard-line. Minutes later, the Skyhawks were in the end zone. Monacan had to punt on its next position and Bird was ready to score again. Chiefs' defense stiffened, though, and Bird got only a field goal. Monacan's offense then got involved, picking up a first down on the ground. That set up Doren Brown's sprint down the left sideline with a screen pass for a 62-yard touchdown.
Chiefs' defense held again. Late in the first half, the offense moved into place for a potential game-tying field goal. Bird blocked the try, though, and minutes later, Bird's John Taylor ran 78 yards down his left sideline for a score that put Bird up 10 at halftime.
Chiefs gave up a third-quarter scoring drive that seemed to end the game, putting Bird on top 24-7. But Monacan got a big 57-yard kickoff return from Brown to the Skyhawks' 35. Moments later, Mark Parson took a short pass from Michael Graham and ran it in for a 32-yard score, bringing the Chiefs to within 10. Monacan held again on defense and moved into scoring position before missing a field goal.
Bird then ran out the clock with a nine-minute drive. The Skyhawks, facing a fourth-and-five deep in Monacan territory, called timeout and kicked a field goal with 4.8 seconds on the clock, taking the final margin to 13 points.
Chiefs ended with only 36 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Graham was 5 of 9 passing, for 139 yards and the two TDs. Taylor had 176 yards rushing for Bird.

ON THE AIR: Game will be telecast at 7 p.m., Sun., Oct. 19, on Comcast Cable Ch. 6. Was radio broadcast live on both WRNL (910 AM) and WXGI (950 AM).

Pre-Season Forecast
Richmond Times-Dispatch
Aug. 29, 2002

  • Coach: Keith Daniels
  • 2001: 4-3, 6-3
  • Offense: Chiefs have size and experience up front with Will Randolph (6-1, 250), Eric Turner (6-0, 245), Brian Kelly (6-4, 295), Matt Arendall (6-3, 305), David Self (6-2, 265) and Ryan Holston (6-4, 215). Skill players -- QB Jordan Arnold, backs Mark Parson, Doren Brown and Aaron Thornton, and WR Marcus Murrell -- are largely untested.
  • Defense: Speed and aggressiveness may make up for lack of experience. LBs Shaun Dickerson and Bryan Buford are back, along with backs Brown and Parson. Holston, Adam Burgess, Kris McWhirt and Michael Graham make up the front line, backed by Chris Cappa and Marcus Eaton. The safety is Tyrone Sharpe.
  • Prognosis: Several coaches think the underclassmen-dominated Chiefs could finish at or near the top. Others think they'll fall somewhere in the middle. Early schedule is tough, but Monacan should make noise as it gains experience.
  • Notes & Achievements
*9/12: RB/CB Doren Brown named Times-Dispatch Player of the Week following Chiefs' win over Mills Godwin. Brown rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown (on 7 carries), returned a punt 52 yards to set up the TD, and made a diving interception to stop a Godwin scoring threat.
*10/4: RB/CB Doren Brown sets Monacan all-purpose yardage record of 285, the Times-Dispatch reports 10/10. Brown had 225 yards rushing (on 11 carries), a 20-yard punt return and a 40-yard fumble recovery return in a 38-12 win over Midlothian

17 L.C. BIRD L 14-28 Monacan came out pumped up to play the Skyhawks. Very intense game between these two teams to decide district champs. But Bird made some adjustments on defense to shut down the Chiefs. Bird scored two touchdowns of its own to take over the district lead. Untimely injuries and turnovers led to only the Chiefs' second loss. Rob Twyman led the Chiefs' on offense with the two touchdowns, and Rusty Linville was a standout on on defense. Rematch eight days later. Great defensive effort by both teams. On a rain-soaked field, both teams were held scoreless for the entire game. After a scoreless first overtime, the teams went into a 2nd overtime. Manchester finally won by fumbling into the end zone and recovering the ball to win 6-0.

5 at Hermitage W 14-6 In one of the best played games of the year, Chiefs walked off the field with a hard-fought 14-6 victory. Both the offensive and defense played extremely well. Monacan fans were well-represented on an early Saturday morning.
10 GEORGE WYTHE W 39-0 Monacan totally outplayed and overmatched the Wythe Bulldogs. Chiefs able to work on basic offense and defense. Subs got considerable playing time.
17 L.C. BIRD W 13-8 Third straight win came in a defensive battle that was perhaps the most exciting game of the year. Both teams played hard. Monacan took an early 7-0 lead, but gave up an L.C. Bird touchdown run and two-point conversion to trail 8-7 at halftime. Late in the 2nd half, with Bird back to punt, a bad snap enabled Monacan to gain good field condition. Monacan quickly moved the ball downfield. With a little over 2 minutes remaining, Justin Vara threw a perfect pass to Brian Kelly into the end zone to take a 13-8 lead. Bird's last drive was ended when the Chiefs recovered a fumble. Offense then ran out the clock.
