| 7 | GODWIN No. 9 in region |
W, 21-10 | Chiefs gave up TD on Godwin opening drive, then only a field goal the rest of the way to the visitors, ranked No. 9 in the Richmond region. Strong team defense and good running by Kraig Bridy and Jamel Carrington kept the Chiefs close. Monacan tied the game 7-7 shortly before half, with a long pass from Sean Kelly to Marcus Murrell setting up Bridy's short score. They fell behind 14-10 in the third quarter, then took the lead for good on Bridy's 84-yd TD run. A 17-yard Kelly-to-Doren Brown TD pass ended the scoring. Brown also had an interception. Chiefs ran out the clock deep in Godwin territory. Bridy: 23 carries for 185 yards. Kelly: 5 for 9 for 104 yards passing. Murrell: 3 catches for 76 yards. Carrington: 7 carries for 28 yards. Game was scoreless until the second quarter when Sean Kelly hit Nathan Holston (playing with a cast on his right hand) for a 9-yard TD, then Kraig Bridy with a throwback screen that he turned into a 60-yard TD. Late in the half, Mark Parson blocked a punt that Brian Buford recovered for another score, making it Chiefs 21-0 at half. Joey Fore hit a 38-yard field goal. Chiefs gave up a 69-yard bomb for a TD. | 28 | MANCHESTER | L 6-10 | No. 7-ranked Chiefs and Lancers played on-air as WRNL-AM 910 game of the week. Monacan took opening kickoff and drove most of the field but failed to score a TD on 4th and goal from the 5-yard line. Manchester took over and drove the length of the field in 20 plays behind an offensive line with guards 6-5/240 and 6-3/265 and the tackles going 6-3/310 and 6-4/400 (yes, 400 pounds. Manchester completed the drive with a touchdown early in the 2nd quarter. Lancers added late-quarter field goal for 10-0 halftime lead. Mark Parson scored on a 30-yard run on the Chiefs' first possession of the second half. Game continued to be a defensive struggle. Monacan, led all game by Kraig Bridy's running, drove deep into Manchester territory twice late in the fourth quarter. Second drive, coming in the final minute, seemed to end with a quarterback sack on 4th-and-40, but three Manchester penalties on the play and after it gave Monacan 45 yards and kept the drive alive. But Manchester's defense, especially its ferocious pass rush, stopped the Chiefs. Bridy, one of the region's leading rushers, gained 153 yards on 23 carries. Quarterback Sean Kelly, under duress all game, finished 0-for-5 passing with 7 sacks. Parson, who played strong defensively and rushed for 52 yards on 4 carries, was named Monacan's player of the game by WRNL's broadcasters. (Derek Creger was Manchester's, with two sacks, eight unassisted tackles and a blocked punt.) Cosgrove: 7 tackles. Parson, McAllister, Dickerson, Eaton: 6 tackles each. Buford: fumble recovery.

| 5 | at Midlothian | L 0-21 | Chiefs never got going offensively in disappointing loss to rival that dropped their record to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Dominion District. Midlothian's solid running game and two big scoring plays were more than enough: Anthony Connant's 62-yard touchdown pass on a halfback option in the second quarter and 40-yard touchdown run in the third. Matt Pearson led Midlo with 118 yards on 24 carries. Chiefs had 127 total yards and 57 yards rushing. Bridy: 7 carries, 21 yards. | 13 | WYTHE | PPD to 11/13 | Game originally scheduled for Oct. 13 at Huguenot H.S., postponed for lack of security personnel. Tentatively rescheduled for Oct. 15, then forfeited, also for unavailability of security on late notice. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported the confusion came when George Wythe High School officials gave off-duty police officers an incorrect 1 p.m. Saturday starting time for the game instead of 7:30, according to a police spokeswoman.
However, at the request of both teams, the game was rescheduled in early November for Tues., Nov. 13, at Monacan. |

| 19 | L.C. BIRD No. 3 in region |
L 38-13 | Strong performance by the Chiefs, especially defensively, despite the final score. Game was Monacan's homecoming, and Channel 6's Game of the Week. Broadcast by Radio Station WHAP-AM. Powerhouse Bird team entered undefeated in the Richmond area, having lost only the season opener, 14-7 to GW-Danville. The Skyhawks used their power running game with backs Jason Snelling (who committed to the University of Virginia this week) and John Taylor to grind out two touchdowns on their first two possessions. Second score came on the first play of the second quarter to make it 16-0. After that, the second and third quarters belonged mostly to the Chiefs. Swarming defense slowed down the Skyhawks, and the Chiefs began to move the ball behind Jamel Carrington and Kraig Bridy. Chiefs did put up one score. But two missed field goals and a failed fourth down play kept them from gaining more. Still, at the start of the 4th quarter, Monacan trailed only 16-7. Bird's ground game finally wore down the Chiefs. Then its defense returned an interception for a touchdown. Monacan regrouped for a late TD. But with the subs in, Bird reeled off another scoer to [post 22 points in the final quarter. Bridy 13 carries for 81 yards. Carrington 13 for 80. Sean Kelly, 1 for 6 passing for 13 yards, 0 interceptions; 8 tackles on defense. McAllister: 9 tackles. Dickerson, Alexander, Hite, Turner: 6 tackles. Brown: interception.
FROM THE RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH: David Bedwell gathered his team around him in the crisp night air, and in a brief moment proclaimed the essence of L.C. Bird football.

| 26 | at Huguenot | W 33-7 | Chiefs turned in a dominating performance both offensively and defensively on a cool, windy night. Joey Fore hit a 47-yard field goal with the wind, then put the ensuing kickoff to the back line of the end zone. Huguenot followed with its only drive of the game, leading to a 19-yard TD pass and a momentary 7-3 lead. After that, the Chiefs' defense completely shut off the Falcons, even registering two safeties. Monacan's offense, led by the ground game of Kraig Bridy, Sean Kelly and Jamel Carrington, took over, building a 19-7 halftime lead and 26-7 lead at the end of three quarters. Chiefs improve to 4-3. Falcons fall to 3-4. Bridy, 19 carries for 126 yards. Kelly: 5 carries for 91; 8 tackles on defense. McAllister, Dickerson: 6 tackles. Brown: interception. From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

Nickname: Chiefs
Coach: Keith Daniels 2000: 4-3, 6-5 Offense: Veteran starters Sean Kelly (6-0, 190, Sr.) at QB and Kraig Bridy (6-0, 200, Sr.) at RB will shoulder the load. Kelly's chief target is WR Nathan Holston (6-1, 185, Sr.). An inexperienced line features two returning starters, John Cosgrove (6-3, 280, Sr.), who plays both sides of the ball, and TE Charlie Leisfield (6-4, 225, Sr.). PK Joey Fore is an effective weapon. Defense: Eight starters are gone. Last year's backups have to show their stuff right away. Leisfield and Jeremy Hite (6-0, 215, Sr.) are returning starters at DE. Holston is back at safety. Kelly, Bridy, Ryan McAllister (6-0, 195, Sr.) and Jamel Carrington (6-1, 255, Sr.) are an all-new LB corps. Kelly is a good punter. Prognosis: Chiefs made the playoffs last year in Division 5. The chances are much slimmer this year because they move up to a crowded field of contenders in Division 6. Varina has been added to the schedule (second game), and the opener against Godwin is a toughie, too. Predicted finish: 4th in 8-team Dominion District. |
