4 ATLEE W 4-0 The Lady Chiefs welcomed Atlee to Monacan on October 4. It turned out to be a less than warm welcome as Monacan gained control of the game early and refused to let go. Action was fast and furious as Katie Bradt scored a hat trick by finding the back of the goal three times. Taylor Redfearn added her own goal and Martha Crosby and the defense shut out the Raiders of Atlee. Great 4-0 victory Chiefs!
Monacan Goals: Bradt 3, Redfearn.
8 CLOVER HILL W 1-0 Clover Hill - The Rematch! If you missed this one, shame on you! In the first match-up of the year Clover Hill prevailed 1-0 in overtime. In this game, both teams again staged an action-packed 0-0 tie through regulation. In the first game Monacan missed a penalty shot in regulation that would have given them the lead. This time Clover Hill was awarded a penalty shot in the first half. Martha Crosby made a fantastic save to keep the score 0-0. The game ended with that score. Late into the overtime Taylor Redfearn took a pass from Lindsey Marr and shot a bullet across the goal passed the Clover Hill goalie. Chiefs win! Chiefs win! Great game!!
Clover Hill ------------------------------------ 0 0 0 - 0
Monacan --------------------------------------- 0 0 1 - 1
Monacan Goals: Redfearn.
Monacan Saves: Crosby 6.
10 at L.C. Bird W 4-3 What a game! What a comeback! What an upset! The first match-up between these two teams ended in a very close 1-0 loss for Monacan. At the end of the first half the score was 1-0 Bird. The Chiefs battled hard in the second period but Bird was able to score two more goals to take a 3-0 lead late in the game. In a move that will be debated by sportswriters for weeks to come, Bird's coach replaced the starting goalie with another. Then it happened. Taylor! Kara! Taylor! In less than ten minutes, the Chiefs went on a scoring rampage and slapped 3 goals passed Bird's goalkeeper. Overtime! With the starting goalie back in place the Chiefs and Skyhawks battled through the first overtime. No scores. Way to go Martha! Then late in the second overtime in a flurry of action in front of the goal, Kara slapped a shot into the back of the goal. Monacan defeats Bird 4-3 in double overtime!

23 MAGGIE WALKER GS L 2-0 The JV field hockey team opened its season on the road against a tough Maggie Walker team. The team played hard together but came up short in the end. Maggie Walker grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first half and was able to hold that score through the second half.
Monacan Saves: Mavilia 5.
27 at Thomas Dale T 0-0 The JV field hockey team travelled to Thomas Dale for their second out-of-district game. The JV battled a quick Thomas Dale team and some tall grass on the field to end the game in a 0-0 tie. The officials allowed a 5-minute overtime period. However, even after a flurry of activity and some shots on goal that just missed for our girls, the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Catie Mavilia had eight beautiful saves for the Lady Chiefs.
Monacan Saves: Mavilia 8.
29 at Cosby T 0-0 The Lady Chiefs were on the road for a third straight game as they travelled to Cosby to do battle with the Titans. Again the Lady Chiefs played hard against their third straight tough opponent. The hockey team showed their own toughness as they battled to a 0-0 tie.
Monacan Saves: Mavilia 7.
Sept.
10 at Manchester T 1-1 On the road (yet) again. The Lady Chiefs packed up and headed to Manchester in a clash with the Lady Lancers. This time the Chiefs would not be denied a goal. Stephanie Nelson scored her first goal of the season as well as the team's first goal and gave the Chiefs an early 1-0 lead. However in the dwindling minutes of the second half the Lancers found the back of the goal and tied the score 1-1 late in the game. Our ladies tried to take back the lead with some last second shots on goal, but the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Monacan Goals: Nelson.
Monacan Saves: Mavilia 6.
12 at Clover Hill T 0-0 The well-travelled hockey team made their way up Route 360 to face off against Clover Hill. Again our ladies played hard and showed their mental toughness as well as their physical toughness. We had shots on goal that just missed but the ladies kept at it. In the end the final score was a 0-0 tie. It was Catie Mavilia's third shutout of the season.
13 L.C. BIRD W 5-0 There's no place like home!! The JV hockey team liked being at home against L.C.Bird. In their home opener of the season, the Lady Chiefs found the back of the goal 5 times. Three different Lady Chiefs scored in this game. Stephanie Nelson scored 2 goals, Vanessa Picton scored 2 goals and Karyn Vice scored once for Monacan. It was an exciting victory for our ladies and Coach Myers.
Monacan Goals: Nelson 2, Picton 2, Vice.
19 at Midlothian L 0-0 After a great win against Bird, Monacan travelled to the unfriendly confines of Midlothian High School. Again our team played hard against yet another tough opponent. The game ended in a 0-0 tie with Catie Mavilia having 8 great saves for her fifth shutout this season.
Monacan Saves: Mavilia 8.
20 PRINCE GEORGE L 2-0 Back home again, Monacan welcomed Prince George. Although we were at home and the Lady Chiefs had seen Prince George in the pre-season jamboree at Clover Hill, a victory was not to be for our Chiefs. Catie had six saves in this game; however 2 shots found the back of the goal and the ladies lost 2-0.
Monacan Saves: Mavilia 6.
24 JAMES RIVER L 5-0 Monacan faced-off against James River for the first time this season. James River, always a competitive team in field hockey, proved again to be a tough opponent. Five of their shots found the back of the goal, while our ladies found it difficult to score against a solid defense. The final score was 5-0 in a tough loss for our Lady Chiefs.
26 COSBY L 2-0 The Cosby Titans travelled to Monacan for the second match-up this season between these two teams. The Lady Chiefs played hard as they always do. But the outcome of this game was not favaorable for the Monacan faithful. The Titans were able to score 2 goals on our defense and the game ended in a 2-0 loss for the Chiefs.
28 ATLEE 6:00 pm Postponed until Oct. 4
Oct.
3 MANCHESTER L 2-1 Our Lady Chiefs faced off against the Lady Lancers of Manchester for the second time this season. In their first meeting, the action was fast and physical. It ended in a 1-1 tie. This match-up was no different. Our Chiefs played tough head-to-head but fell short when the final whistle blew. The Lady Lancers found the back of the goal twice, but the Chiefs could only get one passed the tough goalie of Manchester.
Monacan Goals: Picton.
4 ATLEE W 2-0 Atlee travelled to Monacan for the Chiefs' fourth and final out-of-district game. The Lady Chiefs were ready to play. It has been exciting watching the team improve each week and in this game they played great. Vanessa Picton put two goals in for the Chiefs and Catie Mavilia added one more shutout to her season. It was an exciting 2-0 victory for Monacan.
Monacan Goals: Picton 2.
