The Making of
a Car Bed...
17/12/01
I bought the wood and all the other necessities around
mid day. I had estimated (going by a catalog from one store) that the
wood alone would cost around AU$75. It was great when I got home, after
going to a different store than the catalog, and the overall cost was
just over $77!!
Measuring was simply- as my plans are very straightforward. Cutting the
wood ended up causing some problems.
Firstly the side boards are very long so I needed to find a table. I
ended up using the outdoor setting table- with a glass top- luckily no
cracks or worse....hehe
The blade of the jig saw slipped from its guide so the blade cut on an
angle when I cut out the wheels- a problem I will deal with later...

Here's most of the wood etc. across my back yard...

I got some more wood from my Dad (actually the whole
of my old bed when I was ten through to 16)- giving me now the legs that
go to the frame I had already got from him, yesterday. Alas I had to
work and so no work was done on the bed until today. So with the rest of
the wood I have cut to to shape this morning and begun to glue the major
bits together with a hardcore "Tough as nails" type of glue.
I've stopped over the middle of the the because of the sun and heat. Now
using the time to update the journal.
I noticed before I came in that I've made a small mistake that I will
have to come up with an answer to before I return. Now that I'm using
the original legs instead of that in my plans, I have not figured out
how I am going to fix the sides to the bed. My plan is to make it easy
to put together and also pull apart- as so we are not stuck with a big announce
when we move, so I'm not really wanting to screw the sides to the base.
That wouldn't be the easiest to repeat. I fear, however, that screwing
might be my only only option in this late of the game.

The glued wood, drying out in the midday sun.
20/12/01 I put the bed together
today- a dry run. It looks good and Luc likes it, so fingers are
crossed!
I managed to keep the need for screws between the base and sides to a
visible minimum.
Tomorrow, I hope to get the paints and start on that.

Luc and I as I put the frame together- I didn't attach the wheels this
time. 21/12/01 You should of seen Jess
when we go the paints. She's a nut case and has taken over of the
painting.
We managed to do a great deal of the under coat and will do more
tomorrow after I get home from work. 22/12/01 Today
we did a lot of the secondary coat. I don't think the red of the car
needs to much more work. So tomorrow, we will concentrate on the finer
details and the wheels- we are making great time!! |
