How Well

How well he must have loved you
to call you home to him
how precious in his sight
your smile that would not dim
how sweet your lilac laughter
purpled awe and golden glee
how fine your rumpled tresses--
he will smooth them now, not me.

How well i surely loved you, dear
though i missed our chance to meet
your ruby lips forever mute
an unknown plan did cheat
your angel petals withered
my rose plucked before her bloom
the place of promise deathly still:
an empty, waiting womb.

How well He must have loved you
to take you home too soon
within my brittle, aching heart
swells a hushed and hopeful tune:
"Wait for me, my little one
till we're joined beyond the breach
just inside His eastern gate
where tears no more can reach."
Peter Pan

Dearest
I crept into your room again
To watch your cherubic slumber
And wondered with a dull, gray ache
When your impish innocence
Will glaze into world-weary wariness,
When gurgling screams of pristine delight
Will fade to muted musings of prim nonchalance
And squirms of embarrassed reluctance
Resist my showers of kisses?
When Peter Pan will fly,
Our Neverland invaded by Mr. Darling.

But not now.
Not today.

Because This Day
I scoop you into grateful arms
Cradle you to my breast
Marvel at your sweet baby smell
And effervescent radiance
Rejoice in the Miracle of you!

Sequestered within my heart
This maternal moment is mine.
Forever.
BOYS!
eagle intensity fused with impish otter glee
luminescent carousels of cosmic curiosity
stubborn shooting stars
loquacious locomotives and master mischief makers
cartwheeling canons belching revelry and sprite
squabbling soldiers brandishing bandaid braggadocio
rumpled cherubs - peacock proud

mud monsters, tousled tornadoes
voracious vultures, scurrying snails
puckish pugilists, tentative Tarzans
raucous Robin Hoods, scampering Socrates

convivial kernels popping with perspicacious promise
gawky cowlicks, scarecrow limbs and beaming grins
dulcet gossamer dreams, downy cheeks and satin sighs
snoring silence at last - always a shade too still

swift swelling rapids running deep, running rare
fleeting wisps of Neverland
grown and gone too soon.
Josiah's Psalm
All the colors of the rainbow
Ev'ry whisper of the wind
Rushing roar of ocean breakers
Bursting joy that is within
Symphony of tender praises
Tuned with awe and gratitude
And our simple thanks He raises
For the wonder that is you!

And the angels lift their chorus
In a lullaby of love
Serenade our precious baby boy
Gift of grace from God above!

Splashing song of foaming fountain
Clapping crown of greening tree
Ev'ry corner of Creation
Joins our lay of laud to Thee!
Purple mountains, painted skies
Raise their psalm of praise on high
Sing our newborn-swaddled treasure
And Him who brought you to our lives.

And the angels lift their chorus
In a lullaby of love
Serenade our precious baby boy
Gift of grace from God above!
Reflections (for Sammy)
Cascading canopies of color
They burst across the heavens
Fiery floral bouquets light up the midnight sky
Bloom in raucous profusion
Shower their iridescent treasure
Over heads upturns and rapt:
   Variegated vermillion
      Boisterous blues and
          Gentle jade

You watch
wide-eyed and wondering
Incandescent eyes glow with awed elation
Chubby cheeks round with ruddy hue
Peals of purple delight pierce the noonday night
As spectacular summer sparklers pale
Beneath the sizzle of your smile.
