Mary Jo & Her Husband, John

  • Raised in Grand Ledge, Michigan, the youngest of eight children.
  • Met her husband, John, in 11th grade Algebra II.
  • 1977-1981, Studied secondary education.
  • Married John on August 8, 1981, at St. Michael Catholic Church.
  • 1983, Moved to Virginia for jobs.
  • Members of Couple to Couple League International since 1980.
  • Certified Promoters for the Couple to Couple League since 1986.
  • 1986, moved back to Michigan.
  • 1985-1993, Had babies.
  • 1995, Decided to give homeschooling a try. Still at it.
  • Currently lives in Okemos, Michigan.

  • 1981, B.S. in Education from Central Michigan University; English major, Physical Education minor.Mary Jo & Her Family
  • 1997, M.A. in Curriculum and Teaching from Michigan State University; Language Arts emphasis.

  • Professional Experiences:

  • 1978-1981, Worked at Kroger through college.
  • 1981-1983, Helped put husband through last two years of college by working as a substitute school teacher, a community education instructor, and a drapery salesperson at Montgomery Ward.
  • 1983-1985, Taught high school English and coached cheerleading at New Kent County High School, VA.
  • 1985, Temporarily retired from professional teaching in favor of staying home to raise a family.
  • 1985-1989, Tutored children from other families until child number three was on the way.
  • 1988-1990, Renew group leader with John.
  • 1991-1993, Chaired committee on high school religious education needs for St. Mary Parish, Williamston.
  • 1991-1994, Served on Sex Education Advisory Board for Okemos Public Schools.
  • 1999 - present, Founding and Presenting Team Member of “God’s Plan for Growing Up,” a program for mothers and daughters, ages 9-12.
  • 1999, Committee and Presenting Member for Lansing Diocesan Clergy Day on Natural Family Planning.
  • 2001-02, Taught Confirmation at St. Martha Parish.
  • 2002-04, Director of Religious Education for Middle School and Confirmation, St. Martha Parish.
  • 2002-present, Women’s Study Group Leader for St. Martha Parish.
  • 2004-2005, Taught Catholic Apologetics with John at St. Martha Parish.
  • 2005-2006, Taught 12th grade religious education with John at St. Martha Parish.

  • The Chastity Avocation:

  • 1977, Wrote high school research paper on Sex Education in the Schools.
  • 1979, Wrote college paper on Sex Education.
  • 1987-1989, Wrote various commentaries on stay-home mothering based on a series of poems.
  • 1987-2003, Spoke with John to engaged and married couples at various Catholic parishes in the Detroit and Lansing dioceses on the beauty of human sexuality and Natural Family Planning.
  • 1991-present, Consultant on Chastity.
  • 1996, Wrote and presented scholarly paper “Sex Education: The Gap Between Theory and Practice.”
  • 1999, Created MOM WITH A MESSAGE for chastity education purposes.
  • 2000, First article “Chastity 101 for Parents” published four times.
  • 2001-2006, Summer study program on Pope John Paul II’s The Theology of the Body.
  • 2002-present, Featured Speaker for parents on chastity at Catholic and Christian churches.
  • 2002-present, Featured Speaker on chastity and vocation for Confirmation and high school retreats.
