The Chambers Family History


Written by Michael Chambers in 1978
Born in Furnace on 30/6/1916
(This is the text only version. all comments in brackets are written by somebody 
other than Michael Chambers )

Paddy Chambers was one of five brothers. Paddy Chambers was my Great 
Grandfather.
	The four other brothers were Tom , Jack , William and Frank.
There were two sisters Kitty and Mary (three also Biddy or Biddeen)
	Paddy Chambers was born in Glen na mBo (Glen of the cows ) about 8 miles 
north west side of Newport in the Co. Mayo at least 176 years ago. He was twice 
married one of his wife's names was (B.) Morrison.
Paddy's family  were Tom , Billy, Frank and Connor, Mary ,Nora Kitty and Margaret 
a step sister.
	Tom Chambers was born in Glen na Mbo about 145 years ago. Tom was my 
grandfather. Tom married Celia McNulty ( also Kitty Chambers married John 
McNulty) brother and sister married brother and sister. Tom and Celia came to live in 
the Millrace in the little village of Furnace 113 years ago. Some years later they 
bought a small holding to the East side of Furnace and settled there. The village of 
Furnace is three miles to the North of Newport in Co. Mayo.
	Tom and Celia Chambers family were Mary , Pat , Kitty, Biddy, John, Nora, 
Celia, Willie, Thomas and Maggie.

	Mary Chambers (my aunt) married Jimmy Kilroy of Furnace and went to 
America about 100 years ago. They had 12 children and were well to do. Jimmy 
Kilroy was uncle to Michael Kilroy of Newport who was a TD. My Aunt Mary died in 
America over 50 years ago and Jimmy Kilroy lived to be a very old man.
Pat Chambers of Furnace was my Dad. My mother was Catherine McNeela of 
Ballycroy .There were four brothers and three sisters in my Dad and Mom's family 
	Johnny and wife & family in Letterlough near Newport.
	Paddy & wife and family in Wicklow.
	Celia , a widow in Newport.
	Mary died in Newport in 1954.
	Frank & wife and family in Coventry
	Kathleen died in Furnace in 1964
	Michael and Hannah in Luton since 1968.

Patrick Moran was a school teacher, He finished his teaching career in Knockbreaga 
N.S. in Tiernaur . he was married twice. His first wife was Nora Tom William 
Chambers of Shramore, Newport, Co. Mayo She died and left a boy and a girl. I 
know the girl is a Mrs Mulchrone.
	Patrick Moran's second wife was a Mrs Fadian from Tiernaur. Miss Fadian's 
mother was one of the McManamons of Shramore, Newport they had a large family 

Thomas Moran settled down in the old home. he married Kate McManamon of 
Kilmeena. They had a large family. Thomas died some 25 years ago ..

Father Andy was 19 years PP in Carraroe. he died nigh on 20 years ago .

Michael was a school teacher and he married a Miss McDonnell of Skirdagh near 
Newport. She died young and he got married again. His son is PP in the Aran Islands.

John Joseph was a teacher in Knockloughra in Tiernaur. He married Grace O'Malley 
from Belmullet. John J died a young man. They had a large family.

Mary Moran was a teacher , she married Thomas Moran (shoemaker), They had a son 
Andy . Mary died a young woman.

Celia Moran was a nun in Westport where she died quite young.

James Francis got drowned in Achill Island accidentally, a very young man. Fr. Andy 
was a CC in Achill at the time.

Biddy Chambers went to America over 90 years ago she was Mrs Burke and had a son 
Tom.

John Chambers, my uncle went to America. He married one of the Kilroy's of 
Carrickaneady. They were first cousins and had a family.

Nora Chambers married Master Gibbons. He taught in Treenbeg N.S. for 45 years. He 
was born in Louisburgh near Croagh Patrick. They lived in furnace for a few years. 
Then they bought a small farm in Fauleens. They had three sons and two daughters. 
father Tom Gibbons, Geoff Gibbons lived in the old home. Geoff married Agnes 
Gibbons from Kilmeena. they had one son and two daughters. Agnes died a young 
woman .
	Tony Gibbons was a teacher, he never married and is retired now.
	Mary Gibbons married Jack Nickson. They had three sons and a daughter. 
Liam Nickson died very young. Tony Nixson is married in the old home to Nora 
Conway from Shramore. Jack Nickson was a convert.
	Sal Gibbons was a N.S. teacher. She never married and is retired now.

Celia Chambers (my aunt) married Pat Chambers (Pat a Poll). They were no relations.
There were three sons and three daughters. Tom was the eldest son, he was called 
Green . He married a Miss O'Boyle from Glenhest. They had two sons and one 
daughter. Green died about ten years ago.
The two other brothers never married and are both dead . Pat and John were their 
names.
	Agnes Chambers, the elder sister married Pat Ellen Murray from Shramore 
when I was a schoolboy. They had no family and are both dead now.
	Lena Chambers never married and is dead now. Pat Chambers senior was 
uncle to Mike Chambers who keeps the paper shop in Newport.
	Kate Chambers the third sister went to America in my schooldays. She married 
a man named Rowland in America. Mr Rowland was born near Lahardane in County 
Mayo . They came back to live near his homeland some twenty years ago. Mr 
Rowland is now dead, one of his sons died in London a few years ago. He was about 
35 years.

Willie Chambers (my uncle) was a policeman in Birmingham. He was married 
to Mrs Ann Sheehan and had one son and 5 daughters. One of the daughters Josie is 
married in Newport to Jim Kelly . They have the Angler's Hotel in Newport. Jim Kelly 
is brother to Dominick and Mikie Kelly who were married to my two sisters. My sister 
Mary was married to Dominick Kelly . She died 9/3/1954 and left two boys and two 
girls. My other sister Celia was married to Mikie Kelly. They had no family and Mikie 
died on 24/10/59.
Jim and Josie have one daughter Antoinette, she is married and lives in the Hotel.
I would like to say something about the Sheehan family. Mr and Mrs Sheehan came 
from the North. Mr Sheehan was manager to Captain Lapramandy an English Catholic 
, who owned Treanlaur Lodge which is about 5 miles to the North of  Newport. 
Captain Lapramandy owned a large ranch also. So Mr Sheehan's daughter Mary Ann 
married my uncle Willie and the other daughter Alice married frank Chambers who 
was the father to Mike Chambers who owns the paper shop in Newport now. Frank 
Chambers was brother to Pat Chambers (of Poll) who was married to my aunt Celia.

Thomas Chambers (my uncle ) was married to Nora Chambers in Fauleens, quite near 
Master Gibbons. They had three sons and one daughter Celia who died a few months 
ago over here in London. Frank Chambers is married to an English girl and lives in 
Fauleens and has a family.
	Paul Chambers my first cousin died about six years ago. He never married.
	Tommy Chambers is still alive and he never married.
Thomas Chambers and Nora Chambers were second cousins.

Maggie Chambers (my aunt) died a young girl.

Billy Paudin was brother to my grand father Tom. he lived in Shramore and was 
married to Ann Nial McManamon also of Shramore.
	Their family of 4 sons and 3 daughters.
Son Willie (Brannen) was married to Bridget McDonald from Glenamoy. They had 3 
sons, Willie junior has a pub called Brannen's in Newport. he is married to a Conway 
girl from Ballycroy whose mother was Chambers from Drumlong outside Newport and 
who came from Jack (one of the five brothers).
Nial junior is married in the old home, his wife comes from Glenamoy.
The third son Paddy  went to America and is married over there.
Old Brannen and the wife are dead, They lived in a little place in Shramore called 
Rusheen.
Nial Chambers senior went to America over 50 years ago. he came home from 
USA in 1932 in his fathers home behind the Black River. Nial married Kate 
McManamon of Shramore. Kate's mother was Catherine Chambers sister to Pat and 
Frank of Poll.
Nial and Kate had 3 daughters , one of the daughters is married at home. Nial 
died about 12 years ago. Behind the Black River was called Turkluy.

Billy Paudin's two other sons went to America. Their names were Fred and Connor. 
They were married and had families 
(There was also another son named Pat in America was married to Anne O'Neill of 
Lettermaghera and died in his twenties of TB. Their only son Neil died in his thirties).
Mary William was the oldest sister. She was married in Shramore to Jimmy McIntyre . 
They had about 12 in family. 3 of them died in their twenties . Some of the family 
went to America, some to Africa and some are in England. Connor McIntyre is a very 
rich man in Africa.
Bill McIntyre is married at home to Annie McLoughlin of Treenlaur. They have a 
family.

Katie William the second sister was married to Pat McNulty of Glen da Hurk (The 
valley of the two boars) Both Katie and Pat were first cousins to my Dad. Johnie 
McNulty , son to Pat and Katie is married in the old home to Kathleen (Mary) Big 
Willie of Skirdagh . By the way Big Willie was son of William (one of the five brothers 
) Johnie McNulty is turned 80 years now. he had a large family of his own. Johnie got 
married in 1936.

Johnie McNulty's brother went to America. His name was Willie. Willie married Fred 
McDonnell's sister of Skirdagh. Willie McNulty is dead now. Willie had three sisters 
in America, Bridie, Ann and Nora. One of them was a Mrs Mulchrone, one was a 
Mrs Philbin. Mulchrone and Philbin came from around Newport. I don't know who 
the third sister married, but I know they all had families. Another sister Lena married 
Tom Kilcoyne from Tiernaur, they lived in Harrow, Middlesex. Their son was 
drowned about 16 years ago. Tom Kilcoyne died about 8 years ago.
Barbara McNulty was married to Pat Cusack from Tiernaur. Pat died about two years 
ago . they had a family and lived in harrow also. Tilly McNulty married Pat rice from 
Carramore near Newport. They sold the house and land and went to live in England. 
They had a family.

Bridgie William the third sister was married to John Callaghan of Clu a Finna near 
Skirdagh . John Callaghan died at Christmas 1938. They had a large family. The 
youngest son was Connor Callaghan. He sold the house and land and went to the 
United States. Mrs Callaghan went to America and she died in the USA about five 
years ago 
She used to visit Shramore quite often and she used our house coming and going. Mrs 
Callaghan had about ten in family, 5 sons and 5 daughters.
at my old mothers funeral in 1969 I met one of the Callaghan girls at the funeral. she 
was on holiday from the USA. She had a son a priest with her and a lovely young 
priest he was.

Frank Chambers was a brother to my Grandfather Tom. Frank chambers got married 
late in life to Kitty Chambers. Kitty Chambers was daughter to Mary Tom. Tom was 
one of the five brothers. They had no family. Kitty was known as Kitty Billy. They 
lived at Cloonfoher (Frank died in 1910 born 1832 ) Kitty died about 20 years ago.


Connor Chambers was a brother to my Grandfather Tom. He went to America long 
ago, he was married and had a family.

Honer Chambers was sister to my grandfather Tom. she was an old maid and she lived 
in Shramore with her brother Billy Paudeen. She died about 45 years ago.

Kitty Chambers was a sister to my grandfather Tom. She married John McNulty and 
they lived in Doontrusk about two miles from Newport. It was double wedding. Celia 
McNulty married Tom Chambers and John McNulty married Kitty Chambers.
Frank McNulty son of John and Kitty 
Frank and Mary B O'Grady were married about 54 years ago (Mrs McNulty was a 
neighbour) Frank's family were two sons and two daughters, one son Frank junior 
died when he was six years. John Michael, Frank's other son is in the old house he is 
not married.
Mary B is sister to John Michael, she is Mrs McGarry Fergus and lives about two 
miles from home on the side of the Mulranny road. They have a young family .
Kathleen is the other sister and she is married to P.J. O'Malley , Bridge House , 
Burrishoole. They have six in family.
P.J. O'Malley's sister Bridie is married to my brother Paddy in Wicklow. Frank 
McNulty died about twenty years ago and his wife died about five years ago.

Michael McNulty was a brother to Frank. he was a policeman in Tipperary and was 
married to a teacher from Tipperary. She was a teacher in Lettermaghera school to the 
west side of Furnace. She retired about 1940. The school was closed shortly after and 
was demolished in 1943. they lived in acres near Burrishoole and had no family. She 
also taught in Shramore.

Ann McNulty was sister to Frank. She lived with frank in the old home, she was an 
old maid. She died about 15 years ago.

Another sister married Tom Maloney of Cahergal near Burrishoole. She died a young 
woman. Their son John Maloney lives in the old home yet. He never married and is 
about 75 years now.

Another sister of Frank's was married in America to a man named Mullin near 
Tiernaur .

Another sister of Frank's  married a neighbour named Garavan . They lived in the 
north of England and had a son a priest . I saw on the Catholic Paper about three years 
ago where their son is a Canon up the North of England . The Canon is also a small 
farmer . He has 5 acres of land . He grows his own fruit and veg , has a lot of fowl . 
He has no help , only his housekeeper . The Canon is about 74 now .


Mary Chambers was the third sister in grandfather Tom's family and she was married 
to Peter McManamon a son of Frank Mor McManamon . They had one daughter and 
Mary died when the baby was six months old . The daughter died in her early twenties 
of TB.

Biddy or Biddeen Chambers was sister to my Grandfather Tom . She was a Mrs Dyra 
from Alt Buide near Skirdagh . 
Her son was Michael Dyra and lived in the old home .
Michael Dyra was married to John Dyra's daughter of Skirdagh .
John Dyra was born in Keenagh 7 miles the Shramore side of Crossmolina . John 
Dyra's mother was Kitty Chambers and Kitty Chambers was sister to Paddy Chambers 
my great grand father . (He was known as John Kitty ) 
Michael Dyra and his wife were second cousins . Michael Dyra's wife died very young 
and left two boys and two girls .
One of the sons got married in London . I think the rest of the family are still at home . 
Michael Dyra had a brother Connor who worked for Frank McNulty . Connor never 
married . Michael had another brother and he died young . Michael Dyra lived to be a 
very old man .

(Long Jim Kilroy's sister Ellen was a Mrs O'Malley of Ros an Rubble . She had two 
sons and 4 daughters . Mike O'Malley had a lorry 50 years ago .)

Margaret Chambers was step sister to my grand dad Tom .
she was a Mrs Kilroy from Carrickaneady about one and a half miles the Castlebar side 
of Newport . She had 4 sons and 2 daughters . Two of her sons got killed on the 
railway in America .
Long Jim Kilroy lived in the old home . The other brother John lived quite near . Jim 
and John were married to two sisters named Keane from Gortaworla , a village quite 
near . 
Their sister Tilly Kilroy was married to Eddie Kilroy and they lived in Derrylahan 
about a half a mile from Newport on the East side of the Mulranny road .
Eddie Kilroy was born in Furnace and was a brother to Jimmy Kilroy who was married 
to Mary Chambers my aunt . Please see page 2 .





Michael Kilroy the TD was son to Eddie and Tilly of Derrylahan .
Long Jim Kilroy had two sons and a daughter . his daughter was married to a Martin 
Harte of Glenhest . I know they had a family .
Jim Kilroy junior was married to Annie Chambers from Glen Laure  near Skirdagh . 
She died a young woman and left a family .
Jim and Annie were no relations .

Jim's other brother was named Martin . He worked in England and Dublin in his youth. 
I lost touch with Martin.

John Kilroy had 2 sons and 2 daughters . One daughter married Jim McHugh who had 
a farm nearby. They had a family. Jim died about 3 years ago.
Jim McHugh was a nephew to Michael McManamon.
Michael was a Glenhest man and he was married to Mary Kilroy who was a daughter 
to Eddie and Tilly of Derrylahan.
John Kilroy's second daughter married a man named Griffen from Gortaworla. 
Griffen's father was a stranger but he was married to a Keane girl from Gortawarla . 
There were quite a few Keane families in Gortawarla 50 years ago.
I don't think any of John Kilroy's sons got married, if they did they were old.

Tillie and Eddie Kilroy of Derrylahan. Their family.
Michael (TD) and John married two sisters named Leonard from near Lahardane.
They both had large families.
Dominick died young.
Paddy went to America.

married and lived in America )

Bridget Kilroy , their sister married Pat McNeela  my uncle of Ballycroy. They had 
four daughters and 5 sons. Michael one of the sons is married in the old home and has 
a family. Bridget Kilroy (Mrs McNeela was daughter to Eddie and Tilly of Derrylahan)

Mary Kilroy married Michael McManamon. They had 3 daughters and one son Joe. 
Joe is married and has a family. He lives in Derrylahan now for about 40 years. Joe 
married Tom McManamon's daughter from Graffy near Skirdagh. There is Upper 
Skirdagh, Skirdagh and Lower Skirdagh.

Maggie Kilroy of Derrylahan was married to Tom McRory. He was a stranger. They 
lived in Derrylahan for some time. They had one daughter and Maggie died shortly 
after. Tom McRory left Derrylahan then.( and joined the Gardai in 1933. He was in 
the Irish Army and was responsible for the escape of Michael Kilroy from the Glass 
House Prison in the Curragh in 1922/23. He deserted from the army and came to 
Newport with Michael Kilroy and was on the run . He was a native of Belfast and was 
a member of the Truce IRA under Frank Aiken who was S.O.C.. He joined Michael 
Kilroy's column who were then at Sheeaun Lodge, Ballycroy, which was a training 
camp for the IRA )

Big William Chambers was brother to Paddy Chambers, my great grandfather.
Big William Chambers lived in Upper Skirdagh up in the mountains. he was married to 
a Keane girl from Gortawarla. 
They had 3 sons and one daughter.
Big Willie son to Big William had the old home. he married Catherine O'Malley from 
Skirdagh . They had 3 sons and 3 daughters. Please note that Big William and Big 
Willie got married late in life. 
Big Willie died about 45 years ago.

Kathleen married Johnny McNulty. Please see page 11.

Packey Big Willie is married in Tiernaur to a girl named McLaughlin and they have a 
large family.

Joe Big Willie sold the old home in Upper Skirdagh and he bought Paddy McGovern's 
place in Buckagh in 1954 and he married Mary Geraghty of Buckagh. they have a 
family.

Brendan Big Willie went to America.

Mary Big Willie married Pa Horan near Derrylahan .They have a family.

Julia Big Willie is a nun out foreign.

Please note that Paddy McGovern's mother was Spellman. She had brothers in USA.

Frank William was son to Big William and a brother to Big Willie.
Frank William lived in Skirdagh also. He was married to Pat Ellen Murray's sister 
from Shramore (Please see page 7 )
They had a large family , none of the family is living in the old home now.

Tom William was a brother to Big Willie and Frank William. 
Tom William lived in Shramore behind the Black River in Turkcluy.
Tom William was married to Honie Nial who was sister to Ann Nial .
They had four sons and five daughters .
Nora Tom William was married to Patrick Moran (please see page 4)

Mary Tom William was married to John McNeela and lived in Claggan Mountain three 
miles north of Mulranny (John McNeela was my uncle )
They had one son Martin and five daughters.
Martin McNeela joined the Guards 43 years ago and he is chief clerk now in the 
Phoenix Park this 10 years . He is married to a Donegal girl and has a large family.

Celia McNeela is married to a Kilmeena man in Harrow . They have a family.

Tilly McNeela is married in the old home to Tommy McGlynn from Tiernaur. They 
have a large family.

Mary K McNeela was married in England before the war, she died young and left one 
son . Her mother reared the son.

Maggie McNeela was married in England 

Nora McNeela was a nun in England.

Kate Tom William is married to Tom McHale of Tiernaur. They have a large family. 
They are still alive. Tom McHale is uncle to Tom McGlynn that is married to Tilly 
McNeela in Claggan Mountain.

Tilly Tom William was married to Michael Maloney a next door neighbour. They had 
two sons and one daughter. Tilly died about 10 years ago. Michael is still alive, he 
must be 90 years now. Their daughter is married in England. I don't think the sons 
got married yet.

Julia Tom William went to America about 50 years ago.

Pat Tom William was married to my mother's sister Celia in Liverpool. They had two 
sons and two daughters. The two sons are married and I think the two girls are single. 
Pat and Celia are dead.

Frank Tom William went to America over 50 years ago. He got married over there.

Bill Tom William was married to a cousin of Pat Ellen Murray's of Shramore. They 
lived in Glenhest, they had a family . Bill and the wife are dead. Bill Tom William was 
called the Ring.

Tommy Tom William lives in the old home and he never married. He is 79 years now.

Julia Chambers was sister of Big William of Skirdagh. She was dumb. She lived in 
Tom Williams of Shramore. She died about 40 years ago.

Also Big William had a sister, a Mrs Lynn who lived in Duleek . They had a farm and 
post office. Duleek is about 20 miles from Ballina. Mrs Lynn had a family .

Tom Chambers was brother to Paddy Chambers my great grand father.
(Francis) Tom Chambers lived in Shramore and was married to Biddy Neal.
Ann Neal, Honie Neal and Biddy Neal were three sisters and were married to three 
first cousins.

Tom Chambers was father to Francis Tom, Johnie Tom , Mary Tom  and Biddy Tom. 
Francis Tom was married to Biddy Neal (McManamon). Their family was one son and six daughters.
The son' name was Thomas Francis (died 1937)
Thomas married Ellen O'Malley of Treenbeg. Thomas was over 40 years when he got 
married , They had 5 sons and 2 daughters.
Thomas Francis died suddenly in 1937 when the oldest was 10 years. the two 
daughters married two Quinn brothers from Newport. Francie and Michael live in the 
old home with their mother. The boys are single yet. Tommy is married in Dublin. 
Paddy went to America and Sean was reared with the grandparents in Treenbeg. I 
think he is still there. They live behind the Black River in Turkcluy.

Mary Francis was married to Big Willie Chambers of Tiernaur (They were not related )
Big Willie died about 25 years ago , but I think Mary is still alive.
Their family 3 sons and one daughter . Their son John died in the War.
Their son Michael went to America. Their son Francie is married in the old home to a 
Conway girl of Ardagh. They have a family .
Their daughter Ann married John O'Malley from Treanbeg.John's brother to Ellen 
who was married to Thomas Francis. They have a family.

Bridgie Francis was married to peter McManamon . Peter Honer died over 50 years 
ago and left a large family. Peter junior lives in the old home. he married Nancy 
O'Malley. They have a large family. Nancy O'Malley was born in Treenbeg and she is 
sister of John and Ellen. Ellen was married to Thomas Francis. John is married to Ann 
Chambers. Please note that Peter Honer's sister was Mrs Fadian of Tiernaur and Mrs 
Fadian's daughter was Patrick Moran's second wife. Please see page 4.

Katie Francis was married to Thomas O'Malley of Gowlan. Gowlan is about three 
miles north of Shramore. It is in the barony of Tirawley. They are both dead, Katie 
Francis died last year.
	They had 3 sons and 2 daughters. One daughter is a Mrs Kilroy and the other 
daughter is a Mrs Kilker. They all live in Tirawley.
Two sons live in the old home. They never married (Vincent and Tom)
The other son Tony is married to Mary Chambers (Mary came from Jack one of the 
five brothers). Mary and Tony are third cousins. They live behind the Black River . 
Mary's father was John Tommy Jack.

Tilly Francis was married to Frank Noone. They lived in Shramore and are both dead.
They had two sons and one daughter.
Their son Pat is married in the old home. Their other son and daughter are in England.

Annie Francis was married to Martin Mulchrone. They lived about 3 miles the 
Castlebar side of Newport. Annie died about 45 years ago and left a young family. 
Martin died about 10 years ago. Martin was uncle of Teddy Mulchrone of Newport. 
Teddy is married to Aggie Chambers. Aggie is sister to Mike Chambers, paper house.

Lizzie Francis was a nun.

PS Martin Mulchrone got married secondly to Mary Kilroy of Furnace. She was an 
old maid. She was niece to Jimmy Kilroy who was married to my aunt Mary in 
America.

Johnie Tom was son to Tom Chambers .
Johnie Tom was wed to a McManamon girl from the mountains over Skirdagh 
(Teevaloughan)
They lived in Doire Cul Druim which is situated about three miles from Newport off 
the Mulranny road.
They had four sons.
John Johnie Tom lived in the old home , he never married.
Willie Johnie Tom was married near bye to Annie Hoban. they had a family .

house and has a family.

Mike and Maggie had a large family. They had a garage in Newport. Mike was first 
cousin to Dominick , Jim and Mikie. Mike died about 2 years ago.
Katie and Lizzie Billy went to America.
Lizzie married John Callaghan. John was son of Bridgie William of Shramore (please 
see page 13).
Ellie Billy got married in London to a Ballina man. They had one son.
Mary B Billy is married to Michael Chambers (no relation). They have a family. As I 
said before Michael has the paper shop in Newport.
Tom Billy died in 1950 age 70 years.

have a large family. One of the daughters is married to Tommy Lavelle of Furnace. 
Tommy is my godson. Rockfleet is off the Mulranny road near the sea about 4 miles 
from Newport.
Tommy Billy is married to a stranger in the old home. They have no family. (Julia 
McGrath) Since the mother died Tommy sold the old home and is living in Newport .
Frank, Bill and John Billy are married in America.

Kitty was married to Frank Chambers who owned the place. Frank was brother to 
Tom Chambers my grandfather. ( He died in 1910)

Tommy Billy is a guard in Ballycroy. he is married to a Russell girl from Newport. 
They have no family.
John Billy went to America.
Patrick Billy senior was 30 years in America but he came home about 25 years ago. 
He is dead about 5 years. His wife died about 15 years ago.

Nora got married to a Kerry man in London before the war. they settled in Kerry and 
had a large family.
Rose Ann married Charlie Murray from Daire Garb near Fauleens. They lived outside 
Newport and had a large family.
John was married to Roscommon girl in England. They had no family and John died 
about 3 years ago.
Charlie got married to Margaret Needham from near Doontrusk in the old home in 
Buckagh. They have no family.
Tommy is married in England and has a family.

married to a man from Tirawley named Walsh.
Walsh had a brother Anthony Walsh living in a little village named Derrintaggart, near 
Fauleens. Master Gibbons bought the house and lands from Anthony Walsh about 40 
years ago.
Ellen (Margaret ) had a family in America.

Biddy Tom was sister to Mary Tom. She was a Mrs Gillespie and lived in the 
mountains over Skirdagh.
Their son Paddy Gillespie was married in the old home to Julia Tommy Jack .They 
were related. Paddy and Julia had a large family. I think there is no one in the old 
home now.
Paddy Gillespie had two sisters 
Sabina Gillespie was married to Tom McManamon of Shramore. They had a large 
family but Tom was sick in hospital for about 35 years and he died in hospital . their 
son Neal got drowned one Sunday about 47 years ago.
Sabina died in 1938 and her son Pat left the old home shortly after. There was a son 
and daughter married in London (Dan and Sheila in England ) and the rest of the 
family are in the USA (Pat in USA)
There was a lot of McMananamon families in Shramore long ago.
Paddy Gillespie's other sister was married in Glenhest. She was a Mrs Gill and had 2 
sons and 2 daughters. One son and the two girls were married in London and had 
families. The other son was married in the old home.

Jack made two halves of the old home , one half to Tommy Jack and the other half to

Nora Tommy Jack married Pat Collins of Cahergal. She was Pat Collins' second wife. 
His first wife was an aunt to Johnie McNulty of Glen da Hurk. Pat Collins had one son 
with the first wife but he had a large family with the second. Their son John is married 
to a girl from Cork in the old home and has a family.

Julia Tommy Jack was married to Pat Gillespie and had a large family.

Kate Tommy Jack was married to Edward Walsh of Lena in Tirawley. They had a 
large family. Their son Michael is married in the old home and has a family.

Their son Jim was in the old home. he never married, he is over 60 years now.

Nora was born blind and lived in the old home, she lived to be a great age.
Pat John Jack was married to a girl from Ballycroy named Sweeney. They had a large 
family. Pat died in hospital in Dublin about 50 years ago. Pat lived in Kilbride near 
Newport. One of his daughters is married to Tommy Murray of Skirdagh. They lived 
in Harrow before the war. I don't know where the rest of the family are.
John Jack's second wife was Walsh from Tirawley.
Family
Billy John Jack went to America and died a young man.
Biddie John Jack lived in the old home and was married to Mick Murray, they had a 
big family. they were only school kids when I left home. Mick Murray was brother to 
Tommy Murray who is married to Pat John Jack's daughter.

William Jack was brother to Tommy Jack and John Jack.
William Jack was married to Hannah McManamon from Tibh Mor in Newport. They 
lived in Drumlong 1.5 miles south of Newport. William was a near relation of Hannah. 
He was a first cousin to Hannah's mother . Hannah's father and mother came from 
Shramore. Hannah's mother's name was Mary Chambers ( daughter to Frank who 
was one of the five brothers). Mary was known as Mary Tibh Mor.
Hannah married William Jack and had a large family.
Their two sons never married. 
One daughter married Christy McNulty of Newport. They had a pub in Newport . 
They had no family. Christy's father was a stranger. (Co Leitrim)
Another sister Mary married Michael Conway of Ballycroy. Their daughter is married 
to Bill Brannen of Newport. (Brannen's Pub) please see page 10.
Annie William Jack was housekeeper to Father Hennelly when he was CC in Newport .
William Jack died about 46 years ago. Hannah was 103 years old when she died a few 
years ago.

Frank Chambers junior left Shramore aged 30 years and bought a shop in Newport in 
Georges Street for £30.
Frank's father died before Frank was born yet Frank died in 1939 aged 94 years.
Dan Kelly had a pub next door to frank in Newport and Dan had a daughter named 
Nannie. So Frank and Nannie got married and they managed the two shops between 
them and they had scores of relations customers.
Their family
They had a large family . One daughter was married to Dr Costella. They lived in 
Liverpool. They had a large family. Dr Costella was brother to Taoiseach Costella .
Another daughter was married to a Dr Keane in Tipperary.
Another  daughter was married to Dick Walsh. He was a National school teacher but 
he was a TD for a few years also. They lived near Mayo Abbey.
Another daughter was married to the manager of Rank's Flour Mills.
Another sister Mary B was an old maid and lived in Main Street in Newport with her 
brother John Francis. John Francis never married. He died about 10 years ago.

John Francis had a large pub in the Main Street . He had a cattle yard also at the rear 
of the pub.
Frank junior got married to Nancy Colgan from Mayo Abbey. She was a National 
School teacher. they got married in 1945. Frank was 45 years old then. They had a 
daughter and Mrs Chambers was expecting her second child in the back end of 1948. 
But poor Frank died quite suddenly in October 1948  before his son frank was born. 
So history repeated itself. Frank senior never saw his father and his grandson Frank 
who is 30 years now never saw his father. Young frank got married to a girl from 
Westport a few years ago. (Browne)

Another daughter of Frank and Nannies was married in Mulranny to Frank Mora. 
They had a pub and both of them died young. They had four sons. The grandparents 
reared them. Two of the Moran lads died when they were about 20. I don't know 
where the third one is but Kevin used to be with John Francis in Newport. I think Daly 
from outside Newport has Moran's pub in Mulranny now.

They had a family. They lived in Skirdagh but they went to live with Mikie Gavin in 
Tomhnaigh na mioltog the Castlebar side of Newport about 40 years ago.
Please note that Nellie Gavin and Mike Gavin were brother and sister to Fred 
McDonald's mother of Skirdagh.

Jim and Frank had a brother in England.

Pat Vary's daughter Ann was married to John Leneghan of Skirdagh. They had a large 
family. John Leneghan was nephew to Richie Bryce of Buckagh (Please see page 36 ) 
Tony Lenahan is married in the old home to Annie Nolan of Buckagh. They have a 
family. 
Annie Nolan's brother Pat is married to a Flaherty girl from the Aran Islands.

Jack and Pat brothers of Tony are in England. Tony had sisters in America.

Pat Vary's other daughter Mary was married to Paddy gibbons who lived three 
quarters of a mile off the Mulranny road on the left hand side. They had a large family. 
I think their son John is in the old home . He is married to a girl from the Midlands . I 
think he is a postman around Newport

dumb and died last year.

married twice and reared two families. Pat died in 1954. I don't think there is any of 
the sons at home now.

I would like to say a word about the Gavin's. Fred McDonald's great grandfather 
lived in furnace near the salmon leap. There used to be an old ruins in a bit of 
mountainy land the north side of the Furnace road.

years ago .All her family are dead now.
Another sister was a Mrs Cleary of Treenlaur all her family are dead now .
Another sister was a Mrs Lavelle of Lettermaghera. All the Lavelles are in England.

family Mrs Moran died about 45 years ago. John died about 15 years ago all the 
family are in England. John and Mathias were brothers

Catherine McNulty was married to John Flannery .They lived about 4 miles the 
Castlebar side of Newport. They had a family.
Their family 
One daughter was a Mrs Brady and she had a pub in Newport. Her husband was a 
railwayman. Their daughter is a Mrs Willie Moran of Derrada. One of the Flannery 
boys got killed in a bike accident about 45 years ago.

John McNulty was a brother to Pat , Bridgie , Mary Ann and Catherine.
John was married to an O'Malley girl and lived near Derrada. They had a family . John 
died a young man and their son John died young also. Their daughter went to America. 
Mrs John McNulty got married again to John Hughes and they had a family .
Martin Hughes their son is married at home to a Kelly girl from Roigh.

Martin Hughes' brother Mick was married in Newport to an O'Grady girl from his 
village. She died young and left a large family. Mick Hughes was a shoemaker.
John Hughes and John McNulty were relations.

Mulranny . She was born the 1/8/1873.
She married my dad nearly 79 years ago . My mother had three brothers. Uncle Tom 
went to America and had a daughter a nun Sister Catherine who was home before the 
war.
Uncle Pat married Bridgie Kilroy and had a large family.
Uncle John married Mary Tom William and had a large family.
Aunt Bridget married Jimmy Fallon in Ballycroy and has a large country shop. Aunt 
Bridgie died 50 years ago. They had three sons and 3 daughters. 
My mother had three sisters in America ..
