Joseph Shafer
GIBBON -- Joseph E. "Spud" Shafer, 70, of Gibbon died Sunday, Aug. 3,
2003, at Beaver Lake.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church
in Grand Island. The Rev. Francis Curran will officiate. Burial will be at
3:30 p.m. Friday in Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell with the Rev. Jim
Heithoff officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Mr. Shafer was born on Aug. 18, 1932, at Bridgeport to William Homer
and Bertha (Mattheyer) Shafer.
Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and a
daughter-in-law, Mike and Mickey Shafer of Beaver Lake and Dan Shafer of
Choudrant, La.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Tom Urbanski of
Grand Island and Cindi and Harv Schultz of Cottonwood, Ariz.; two sisters,
Ruth Conklin of Bayard and Betty Gibbons of Gibbon; and a brother, Bob
Shafer of Gibbon.
Survivors also include 14 grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Alison,
Martin and Tommy Urbanski, Amy Bemis, Jessica and Justin Schultz, Joe,
Emmalee, Crystal and Afton Shafer, Jacqueline Thrash and Kristina Shafer;
four great-grandchildren, Haleigh and Cade Bemis and T.J. and Maddison
Urbanski; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shafer grew up in Shelton. He graduated from Shelton High School in
1950 and joined the U.S. Navy, in which he served for four years.
He married Jo Anne Hindmarsh in February1953, at San Diego. They had
five children. He later married Arlyn Davlin in September 1988, at
Ericson.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Club, Eagles Club
and American Legion.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, woodworking, playing cards and
being with family.
He was preceded in death by one infant son, Donald Douglas; his
parents; four sisters; five brothers; and his wife, Arlyn, in July 1991.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Monica Isenberg
Monica R. Isenberg, 60, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at
St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Trinity Lutheran
Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Martin Schmidt will officiate. Burial
will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes
Funeral Home.
Monica R. Isenberg was born on Aug. 11, 1942, at Grand Island to Leslie
R. and Genive E. (Curry) Conley.
Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and a
daughter-in-law, Rodney A. Bell II of Kansas City, Mo., Donald and
Michelle Bell of Lincoln and Eric S. Conley of Kearney; a daughter and
son-in-law, Jennifer A. and Shawn Rutherford of Central City; and a
brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Marla Conley of Grand Island.
Survivors also include four grandchildren.
Mrs. Isenberg grew up and received her education in Grand Island and
graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1961. She was united in
marriage to John Isenberg in the summer of 1996 at the Fairview Church in
Central City, Nebraska. The couple then made their home in Grand Island.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jeffery L. Bell; and
her husband, John Isenberg.

Marilyn Santin
Marilyn A. Smith, 59, of Grand Island died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at
home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral
Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Ken West will officiate. Burial will be in
the Rose Hill Cemetery at Palmer.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Elmer Kingma
CLARKS -- Elmer R. Kingma, 88, of Clarks died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at
home.
Services are pending with Wagner Funeral Home in Clarks.

Fred Whitney
FULLERTON -- Fred R. Whitney, 85, of Fullerton died Sunday, Aug. 3,
2003, at Litzenberg Memorial Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church
in Fullerton. The Rev. Valjean Warman will officiate.
Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery, with military rites.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Palmer Funeral Home.
Mr. Whitney was born June 28, 1918, in Nance County to Jacob and Mary
(Splichal) Whitney.
Survivors of his immediate family include his wife, Helen; three
daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Jerrold Hibbs of Smithfield, Marilyn
and Terry Grotelueschen of Oklahoma City, and Linda and Dale Lesiak of
Fullerton; a brother and sister-in-law, Leslie and Jean Whitney of
Grandview, Mo.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bill Wynne of
Reinhold, Pa.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Whitney grew up in Nance County and attended District No. 55. He
graduated from Fullerton High School in 1936 and the University of
Nebraska in Lincoln in 1941. He began teaching vocational agriculture in
Rushville.
On June 16, 1941, he married Helen Forney at Fullerton. He continued to
teach in Rushville until entering the Navy in 1942. He served as a
lieutenant.
In 1945 Mr. Whitney returned to Fullerton and began farming on the
family farm. He continued until 1992, when he retired and moved into
Fullerton.
Mr. Whitney was a member of the United Methodist Church, a lifetime FFA
alumni member, and a member of the Lions Club, Tatters, and the Eagles. He
had served on the District 55 School Board, ASCS Board and the Farmers
Co-op Board.
He enjoyed his family, gardening, genealogy, hunting and fishing.
Mr. Whitney received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award in 1998.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Whitney.
Eva Kassebaum
MILFORD -- Eva M. Kassebaum, 91, of Milford, formerly of Taylor, died
Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at Sunrise Country Manor in Milford.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Taylor Methodist Church.
The Rev. Don Studley will officiate. Burial will be in the Cottonwood
Cemetery at Burwell.
Arrangements are by Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent.
Mrs. Kassebaum was born July 10, 1912, at Taylor to O.W. "Jack" and
Ella (Bowlby) Starke.
Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters, Ilene Stroup
and June Schoonover, both of Lincoln; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack
and Nancy Kassebaum of Lincoln and Dale and Betty Kassebaum of West Point;
and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Dehrke of Beatrice.
