Unit 16 - The Spread of Islam and its Influence

1    What does the word "Islam" mean?

      "Islam" mean submission to the will of Allah (god)

2    Why did pilgrims visit the city of Mecca?


      Because pilgrims went to the city Mecca to pray to the Kabba.


3    Why did some of the people of Mecca want to kill Mohammed?

      It was because they were afraid that if people believed in Allah, nobody would come to worship other idols. Then the people of Mecca                 could not collect money from the pilgrims.


4    Where did Mohammed go to escape?

     In AD 622 Mohammed and his followers fled to the nearby town of Medina.


5    What was it that made poorer people take up Islam?

     Most of the poorer people were attracted to Islam because its teachings offered fairer society.


6    What did Muslims believe about the Koran?

     Muslims believed that the words in the Koran were those of Allah, spoken through his prophet Mohammed.


7    What are the Five Pillars of Islam?

1. They must pray five times a day.  2. They must not eat or drink during the daylight hours of Ramadan.  3. They must help the poor.  4.   They   must  worship Allah as the only God. 5. They must visit the Kaaba at Mecca at least once in a lifetime.


8    What helped to spread Islam to different parts of the world?

 After Mohammed’s death in AD632, Muslim armies spread the Islamic religion eastwards to India and westwards across North Africa and       into Spain. 


9     What advances did Muslims make in science and mathematics?                                                                                                            

1.Some Islamic astronomers believed that the earth turned on its own axis and went around the sun. 2. The Muslims invented algebra and          developed trigonometry. 3. The Muslims learned from the Indians the numbers from 1 to 9. It is believe that they added the zero.


10   What advance did they make in geography?

  The Muslims made the most accurate map at the time.

11     Name one famous Muslim story book.

   One of the most famous books is “ Tales from the Arabian Nights ”.


12  How did Muslims help with the spread of culture?

   Muslim traders traveled to China, India, Africa and Europe. This helped the spread of eastern and western cultures.
