| So many of the discomforts that people blame on fatness are really caused by aging, injury or being out of condition. Permanent weight loss is achieved only by permanent semi-starvation, and is tremendously uncomfortable. And no amount of self-starvation will bring about a reversal in aging, nor will it cure injury or increase physical conditioning. Fat is not the problem. And no matter how much we may hope that it is, so that we will eventually be able to avoid the stigma, the terrible labeling of immorality our culture associates with adiposity, fatness is not amenable to our conscious change. The problem is cultural. Individual solutions to cultural problems invariably do not work, and they perpetuate the oppression of others who are similar. Note: This is very much a work in progress.
