"Thanksgiving"

Some Thanksgiving History
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
During the winter of 1621, half of the 102 Mayflower passengers who settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, died. The following spring a Pawtuxet Indian named Squanto helped those who survived plant corn and barley. Their fall harvest was a success, and the colony held a thanksgiving celebration inviting Massasoit, the chief of the Wampanoag tribe, to join their feast of turkey, venison, duck, goose, lobsters, clam, corn, vegetables, and dried berries. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving an annual national holiday.

THE PILGRIMS CAME

The Pilgrims came across the sea,
And never thought of you and me;
And yet it's very strange the way
We think of them Thanksgiving Day.

We tell their story old and true
Of how they sailed the ocean blue,
And found a new land to be free
And built their homes quite near the sea.

Every child knows well the tale
Of how they bravely turned the sail;
And journeyed many a day and night,
To worship God as they thought right.

Many people think that they were sad,
But I'm sure that they were glad...
They made Thanksgving Day, that's fun...
We thank the Pilgrims every one!

Many years ago when I was very young, I had to memorize the above poem for a school play. I'm sure my family was very happy when the holiday and the play were over since I practiced saying it over and over again.

WHAT AM I THANKFUL For?

What am I thankful for this year?
What blessings come to mind?
My dear friends and relations,
So loving and so kind.

Each time I see the sunrise,
And the beauties of the day,
The unexpected little joys,
I find along the way.

What am I thankful for this year?
The small and furry things,
The hope that keeps me going,
The peace believing brings.

I have so much to thank God for,
I don't know where to start,
I only know He walks with me,
And lives within my heart!

A THANKSGIVING BLESSING

Lord, we humbly ask thy blessing,
On the turkey and the dressing.
On the yams and cranberry jelly,
And the pickles from the deli.

Bless the apple pie and tea,
Bless each and every calorie.
Let us enjoy Thaksgiving dinner;
{Tomorrow we can all get thinner.}

For all the help along the way, We're thankful for this Thanksgiving Day.
We're thankful, too for all our dear ones.
For all the far away and near ones.

Although we may be far apart,
We're together in our hearts.
Keep us in Thy loving care,
This is my Thanksgiving prayer.

P.S. If there is anyone who wishes,
I could use some help with the dishes!

Twas the night of Thanksgiving

Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
but I just couldn 't sleep,
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned...
the dark meat and white,
but I fought the temptation
with all of my might.

Tossing and turning
with anticipation,
the thought of a snack
became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen,
flung open the door
and gazed at the fridge,
full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey
and buttered potatoes,
pickles and carrots,
beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling
so plump and so round,
till all of a sudden,
I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling,
floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding
and a handful of pie.

But, I managed to yell
as I soared past the trees...
Happy eating to all...
pass the cranberries, please!
