Thursday, Sept. 4 started out like a normal day. I definitely didnt think that today was the DAY! Alexis slept in a little late so did we. Derek was scheduled at work at 2pm. So we had a slow morning. That morning, I was getting frustrated at the amount of phone calls we were getting. The day before we took our car in to get fixed so the mechanic kept calling to speak with Derek. He called at least 4x before 9am. Finally, the CALL CAME IN. I "knew" it was the mechanic so I asked to Derek to answer the phone. We were both really tired and in bed still. So he answers it and all I hear is~ "oh wow, ok...umm..I will tell her." This made me wonder who it was. Then I hear "yes, sir, we will be right there, we are leaving now." Derek hangs up the phone and tells me, "Let's get dressed. We are going to the hospital.Your ultrasound from Saturday night came back abnormal" He told me he is taking "the bag" in case we need it. I was so sure we would be coming back later that day.
What happened was~ On Saturday night, I went to the hospital because of "decreased fetal movement". I had been doing kick counts for about a week and that night the baby hadn't been moving hardly at all. I had a BPP [bio-physical profile] done that night and it came back with a score of 4. The highest is 10. That is why my dr called us; he wanted to have another u/s done and if it came back with a low score he was wanting to deliver that day. He didnt want to put the baby in jeopardy since he wasnt moving that much.
Anyways, we get dressed. We took Alexis with us since we didnt have anyone to watch her at the time. But that was actually a plus in the long run. I was wanting her to be a part of as much as possible through out the whole birth process. It's about 10am now! So at the hospital, they do a BPP again. The u/s tech said everything was fine. I truly didnt like the way she did it. She rushed through everything and then said,"ok he's fine". That didnt set well with me. The dr said he still wasnt pleased with the results. He suggested we do the c-section that day and not take chances since he hadnt been moving. I was 36w4d and he was sure the baby was fully developed.
All of a sudden things start to move super fast. It's 11:30am and the nurses tell me~"We are going to the c-section at 12noon" EEEKK!! We still had Alexis with us. Derek called my father at his work and said, "Come get Alexis, Wendy is having the baby in 30 minutes." So here is Alexis with us while they are prepping me for surgery. Alexis went with my dad. I walked into the surgery room. A few mintues later Derek joined me. He comes in and tells me:"What in the world are we going to name him?" My response:"I have no clue" So we scrambled for a name since he came unexpectedly that day. At least we had an idea of what we wanted to name him. The dr angled the lights in such a way that I could "see" everything if I looked up. ~ which was cool to see! About 20 minutes later with Derek holding my hand, I heard HIM!! I heard a crying like no other cry in the world. It's something special I will never forget. It was more special to me because that day came more at a shock. We had no idea that when we woke up that morning that we would be seeing our son that afternoon. Once I heard Joshua's cry, I cried, and looked over at Derek and he was already crying. Derek got up and went over to where the nurses had Joshua. His apgars were 8,9. Since it was a c-section, he had a little trouble breathing and had to go on partial oxygen. BUT hours later, I was able to see him and hold him and FINALLY nurse him. Derek and I were overjoyed! Besides the birth of my daughter, Joshua's birth day is something I will never forget.
