Note that the yellow color is derived from only the innermost 1mm or so of the layer and that the fluorescent response is seen only on the innermost surface. Two possible reasons for the fluorescence may be an overgrowth of a secondary mineral such as hyalite opal or a very late addition of uranyl impurity to the wavellite itself. Based on the emmission spectrum of this sample, uranium is confirmed to be the activator. Back |
