With funding from a grant, the Friends of the Sherrill's Ford Library brought us to Sherrill's Ford Elementary School back in May 06 for 10 days of poetry & drama workshops with the Fifth grade. Our residency ended with Adrian reading at the Sherrill's Ford Library to a packed out night.
We really enjoyed working with the teachers and students! Adrian inspired the students to write several poems and a story. He shared with the students his background, Northern Irish culture, and why & how he became a poet. The students' favourite were a story about a little pig and how Adrian wrote his first poem and the story about the last witches' trial in Ireland.
I did storytelling, drama games, listening activities, and scripted poetry. The kids loved the "Freedom Bird" story and follow-up game.
We especially thank the Nelson's for a wonderful dinner and boat ride on Lake Norman and all the hard work in organizing the residency. And President Jean McKinley for all her amazing PR work on our project. These folks were truly professionals!
We are invited back next year for the same project!
