Teachers are always looking for fun and practical ways to bring their subject alive in the classroom and they often turn to the arts for inspiration. But sometimes using the arts can be intimidation and confusing. As a drama teacher, there have been times when I have given up on trying to figure out how to play certain acting games because the instructions were so convoluted.
The
exercises and lesson plans included in this booklet will enable you, the
teacher, to integrate creative arts into your curriculum simply and
immediately. Creative activities
such as art, creative writing, poetry, song, drama, games, environmental
awareness, science experiments and ideas for classroom displays and parties have
been compiled and adapted from various resources and are based on an ocean
theme. I have also written or
reworked some of the projects and handouts directly on the theme of the Belfast
Lough.
The
variety of lessons, activities and exercises included are designed to achieve
the following goals:
individualization, successful group work, creativity and imagination,
skill development, mental agility, environmental awareness, academic enhancement
and, most of all, self-confidence.
These goals can only be met
in a safe, encouraging atmosphere.
To foster a safe classroom, where each child has a voice, make sure
everyone is considerate of each other’s creative work.
Research shows that factual
material can become much more meaningful when the arts enhance the
curriculum. The arts can improve
self-discipline and rekindle an enthusiasm for academic achievement. I hope this booklet gives you several
fun and practical ideas to help you continue your creative approach in the
classroom.
