1. Identify character traits for the following: a. Paul Baumer � German soldier, the protagonist and narrator of the story. He is nice, caring, and sensitive but has lost all of this from the traumatic experience of the war. b. Leer � Paul�s classmate, first to grow a beard, obsessed with math and women, first to lose virginity amongst the group c. Kropp � Paul�s friend and classmate who serves in the war with Paul. He is smart and one of Paul�s best friends during the war. d. Westhus � Peat digger, prefers peace time army to digging peat e. Detering � Farm boy with a wife and a farm back home. He is always homesick and is also one of Paul�s best friends. f. Kemmerich � Grew up with Paul, dies after having leg amputated, leaves boots to Muller g. Himmelstoss � He is a mean training officer who was a postman before the war. By becoming such an important war figure, he developed into a power-hungry man. He torments Pail and his friends during their training but once he arrives back from the front he tries to make amends with them. h. Kantorek � Schoolmaster who persuades his students to enlist, referred to as a shrew mouse, stern little man i. Muller � Another of Paul�s classmates. He is hardheaded and practical. He is always asking his friends about their plans after the war. j. Kat - 40 years old, shrewd, smart, resourceful, can find food anywhere, cobbler k. Tjaden � Another of Paul�s friends during the war. He has a large grudge against Himmelstoss. l. Hamacher, Ollerich, and Gerard Remarque - 2. Explain the following themes: a. The Lost Generation � That war is killing all people of Germany and sending all men into war. And they lost all their youth even though if they returned 21 they lost their childhood. Also lost Great writers, thinkers, mathematicians, and artists. b. The destructiveness of war � That when countries are at war they use all resources for war. When looking at the war area there is mass destruction and dead men and animals everywhere c. Camaraderie � In war it is very easy to lose your mind. Also in able to succeed ur going to need to work together to get things done. The friends used each other to get by and survive the war. d. The corrupting effect of power � In AQWF a postman gets just a little bit of power they can go crazy and go on a power trip. They makes everyone miserable just for there own gain. Also they glorify themselves and put others down for their own enjoyment. e. Shared humanity � That all men are fighting for the same thing. Even though they have different countries, speake a different language, and even have different leaders. But they are still men and need the same things. When in war u could b fighting against your best friend. 3. Identify the symbolism and or irony in the following scenes: a. The bombing of the graveyard � This shows that they have no respect for the dead and that the war is so bad that even the dead people are still getting bombed. b. Paul�s trip home � When Paul visited home he had so many emotions and he realized that all these people had no idea of what war was. He was missing his life at home and wanted to be with his mom c. Kemmerich�s boots � Every time a person dies the boots gets a new owner so after Paul�s death, there is no new owner because his friends are all died. d. the army hospitals � This symbolizes the last road to living. Where people go to die, once you�re there you don�t come back. e. Paul�s death � Paul�s death was Paul letting go. He was at peace no, there was no more death and war for him, and he could go join his friends. f. Little men � The government started to send these infants to die on the front. These young recruits were sent out to the war just for one reason to die. There would be no German people left. |
