All Quiet on the Western Front Group Questions
1. The theme of this passage is comraderie. It is somewhat ironic because they are trying to leave emotion out of war but still be comrades. Their friends are dead or wounded but they have to care for themselves because they are still alive. The tone of this passage is of sorry and letting go. There isnt anything they can do to help their comrades.
2. The theme is the lost generation because the men had not had chance to live and grow. They dont know what love is yet and wont get a chance to learn. All of Pauls security comes from his uniform which shows that military life is all he knows.
3. The theme of this is the lost generation. Everything that he sees when he gets home is all a memory of what he used to be. He is reminiscing about his childhood and how life used to be. He has missed his growing years because of war and is therefore part of the lost generation.
4. This is an understatement of war. They finally get a break to guard a village instead of fighting in the frong. They say they are lucky because they have less casualties yet their friend is dead. War isnt a peaceful time so they take advantage of ay rest they can get. This is a good opportunity for them, but at their age they shouldnt even be at war.
5. The theme of this is comraderie. Paul pays cigars in order to stay with Albert. He wants to stay with his friend because he doesnt have much left. He will give up his precious cigars which arent given out often in order to be with a friend. Albert is one of the only people who is left who is like a type of familiy for Paul.
6. This passage shows the theme of the destructiveness of war. The hospital shows all the people who have been injured. Paul is describing how war cannot be understood by just reading it on paper, you have to be there and witness all the hurt to really know how war is. Hundreds of thousands of people died in Germany, France, Russia and other countries but that cannot be understood unless you are there.
