CNN Cold War Journal
This site relates to the culture of people in the Cold War. It shows different things, from technology during that time all the way to fashion and what the hot things to wear were.
The site shows what television shows were in and what got the most people to sit in front of the tv and watch. Television was a technology that helped people get other things off their mind. There were even tv shows that were especially made to distract people from their daily problems and the war. One thing that women liked to keep their eyes on was fashion. It was always good to know what was in and what was not just like women do today.
Another technology was the radio. People liked to escape from their lives by listening to music too. Two popular singers that people liked to listen to was Barry Mcguire and Bob Dylan. This was a type of entertainment for people, like it is today. Another type of entertainment was drama. They did plays depicting things about the Cold War. Some other technologies were intercontinental ballistic missiles, lunar landers, and one of the most important inventions in history, computers. The competitive nature of the cold war made them create things like the three technologies listed before. Some other creative things were invented too. Such as the microwave, where people could cook their food in a fast easy way without the use of a stove and things like hang gliders.
There was also Cold War assassins. They had to be very discreet and they were sometimes called spies. For weapons they used silenced firearms, cigarette case weapons, key chain guns, suicide weapons, and poison pellet weapons. They also used bugs, invisible ink and bug detectors. A bug was a hidden microphone that could be attached to a tape recorder or radio transmitter.
The president told his people that the atomic bombs could be used at any time from neighboring countries and he warned them that we had atomic bombs too. He also stated that the atomic bomb warning could not be ignored, and everyone had to take precautions. The atomic bomb was very destructive. It could kill many people and we would not have control of the neighboring countries bombing us.
