vocabulary A-F

a. Joseph McCarthy- He was a senator between the years 1950 and 1954. He charged many Americans with harboring communist sympathies. He was eventually condemned by the Senate for reckless behavior. His unjust charges ruined the careers of thousands of Americans.
b. Great Society- After Kennedy was assassinated, Lyndon Johnson set up a new program called the Great Society. It funded Medicare for the elderly, job training and low-cost housing for the poor, and support for education. Many people relied on these programs.
c. Ronald Reagan- He called for cutbacks in government spending on social programs.
d. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka- It was a case in which the Supreme Court declared that segregated schools were unconstitutional.
e. Martin Luther King Jr.- He was a gifted preacher who emerged as a leader of the civil rights movement. He was inspired by Gandhi�s campaign of civil disobedience, organized boycotts, and led peaceful marches to end segregation during the 1960s.
f. St. Lawrence Seaway- It was completed in 1959 by the United States and Canada. It opened the Great Lakes to ocean-going ships and linked the interior of both countries to the Atlantic Ocean.
