May Fourth Movement � students organized boycotts of Japanese goods and set off a cultural and intellectual ferment. d.Guomindang � another word for nationalist part which was the government in South China. e. Jiang Jieshi � energetic young army officer who took over the Guomindang and was determined to reunite China. f. Mao Zedong � a revolutionary of peasant origins who escaped Jiang�s attack who believed the Communists should seek support among the large peasant masses. g. Long March � an epic retreat in which Mao and about 100,000 of his followers fled the Guomindang. h. Rape of Nanjing � the Japanese set up their puppet in Nanjing and their killing and brutality gave the city this name. 2.The new republic of China fell into chaos after 1912 because Yuan Shikai came to power. 3.Chinese reformers wanted to destroy the Communists and to make China a Japanese protectorate.The Japanese invaded China and killed their ruler.
