082606Yesterday was my first State Fair experience for 2006. I spent the afternoon there with Liz, then watched the Rascal Flatts concert that night. They. Were. Awesome. Its my third time catching them in concert though it was my fourth time paying for tickets, but I wont get into that. Eric Church and Gary Allan opened, both talented, crowd-pumping acts. But it wasnt until around 9 p.m. that the theatrics started. It took me back to the days of boy band concerts. I remember one show at Target Center where N Sync flew over the heads of us seated on the floor. That, of course, after forming a human pyramid on stage by standing on each others shoulders. But I digress. The Flatts men had pyrotechnics, an impressive video display, even tons of red, white and blue confetti. It was more than a show. Id call it a fiery treat for the senses. Well, except for that song Skin. I hate it. Seriously hate it. It was a drawn-out, five-minute affair, with the whole crowd holding up their cell phones and singing along all hushed-like. I think I threw up a little in my mouth. A song about a girl with leukemia who cant get a date to the dance? Please. Of course, the Fair was amazing. I tried the new batter-dipped, deep-fried chocolate chip cookies at Axels. If you dont like the deep-fried candy bars, you wont like these. Too much sweetness. Trust me, save your money. The cheese curds were delicious, as expected. With the disappearance of Cob Dogs (deep-fried corn on the cob on a stick), I had a roasted ear of corn that somewhat made up for it. Oh, and the Dole Whip was incredible. Im going Sunday morning with my family and will report back on the hot dish on a stick, one thing I didnt try. When asked what was in it, the woman behind the counter replied, tater tot hot dish. She almost laughed at my quizzical look, since, apparently, Im supposed to know whats in tater tot hot dish. Sorry lady, but I didnt grow up on crazy Scandinavian foods.
