THE MOLINE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL MOLINE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF '59 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Two students have been chosen to receive the first annual scholarships from the Moline High School Class of ‘59 Scholarship Fund as administered through The Moline Foundation.

Casandra Goodpaster is a recent 2009 graduate of Moline High School. She will be attending DePaul University in Chicago, IL in the fall to major in Journalism and Theater Studies.

Austin Boyle is also a recent 2009 graduate of Moline High School. This fall he will attend Augustana College in Rock Island IL, to major in business.

The two Moline High School Class of '59 Scholarship winners were chosen by a Selection Advisory Committee to each receive a $1,000.00 scholarship. The fund was established by the Class of '59 as a way to commemorate their fiftieth class reunion this year. This high school class was also the first class to graduate from the Moline High School building located at 3600 23rd Avenue. It is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year.

Funds were raised by class members and volunteers over the past three years through a variety of fundraisers including barbeques, yard sales, and individual donations.

Founded in 1953, The Moline Foundation is a community-based, non-profit organization which provides grants to health, human services, education, community development, the arts, and other charitable organizations which benefit the citizens of the Quad City region. The Moline Foundation receives and administers charitable gifts. For more information contact Executive Director Joy Boruff at (309) 736-3800 or visit The Moline Foundation Web site at

Moline High Schools's Class of 1959 offering help for new grads

By Staff writer, Nicole Harris

Moline High School's 2009 grads are getting a boost from the Class of 1959 through a new scholarship.

The alumni group raised money through hog roasts, Birdies for Charity and other events to create a scholarship fund marking its 50th class reunion and the golden anniversary of the Moline High School Campus, 3600 Avenue of the Cities.

Applicants for the scholarship, offered through the Moline Foundation, must be 2009 graduates with a GPA of at least 2.8 who provide a transcript and are involved in at least one community service activity. Students also must submit an essay on what they expect their lives to be like in 50 years and why they are interested in the scholarship.

Students seeking a college, university or trade or technical school education are encouraged to apply by April 15. For details, call Joy Boruff at (309) 736-3800 or (309) 721-9744. Applications are available in the high school counseling department or by calling (309) 764-4193.

Remember that our fund-raising efforts are continuing and we are hoping to make a big final contribution to the fund from the hog roasts, Birdie's for Charity, and other events planned for this summer.

If you intend to contribute to the very good cause, you still have time. Won't you please join our efforts and help add to this scholarship? It will give you a reason to be proud!

The class of '59 recognizes that much of our success in life stems from the
education we received in the Moline Schools and MHS in particular.

We think its time to give back.

Following our last reunion summer in 2004, the planning committee voted
to begin raising money, over a five year period of time, to fund a self-perpetuating
scholarship fund for students at MHS in the amount of $50,000. This is an ambitious
task, but we think that our class is up to the challenge.

We need your help.

If you can't be with us to help, maybe it would be possible for you to support us in
some way. perhaps you could write a check to the "Class of '59 MHS Scholarship Fund".
We'll accept whatever help you can spare.

If you live nearby, and would like to join us in this effort, we'd love to have you
come to our next meeting. E-mail Mouse,
[email protected] to be notified
of the meetings by e-mail. We have a lot of fun at these meetings!!

Remember we are officially tax exempt!

If you have donated to our scholarship fund since March of 2005, you can take a tax credit.
E-mail Ray ([email protected]) for a copy of the verification letter.

Read letters from Nonie Moorheusen Young
and Ken Riceman regarding our goal.
