June 19th, 2009 from Ken Riceman:

Ken Riceman, Mike Huckabee, and Bonnie Riceman

Hi '59ers, I just reviewed the recent pictures posted on the website.

Those of us not in the QC area sure are missing out on all the fun.   Bonnie & I just returned home from a trip to the NE.  I played in the LPGA McDonald's Major Championship Pro-Am golf tournament on June 8th and then we did tourist things around Baltimore, Philadelphia and NYC.  While in NY we attended the Mike Huckabee show on Sat the 13th and I'm attaching a photo taken there.   Thanks for the website pictures and we are looking forward to Oct.

Ken Riceman

June 12th, 2009: Here's a note I received from Marywayne Yohn.

Hi Vicki,   My name is Marywayne Yohn.  I have just been going over the website of the Class of '59.  I saw a lot of familiar names in the e-mails and would like to have mine added, if possible.   It is:    [email protected]

It was such fun reading about the lunches and seeing people I don't really recognize except for the names.  I am looking forward to getting the Reunion Book when it comes out.  I am sending in my money and a note.

I was back to Moline for an overnight years ago and didn't know where I was! I was with my brother, David and his wife, and we went around this interchange and our third time around we were laughing so hard my brother could hardly drive!  Moline has definitely changed.

I think the website is delightful.  This is the first time I have checked it out.  I'm looking forward to getting in touch with some friends.   Thanks for the memories.

Marywayne Yohn

June 8th, 2009: This note and two great photos came from Terry (Schultze) Braaten:

I've been having such fun seeing everyone and reading about them on the MHS website.  I'm sending a couple of pictures from a trip to Arizona awhile back.  I'm sure looking forward to the reunion this year and enjoying all the people I've met up with recently on Facebook and other places.  Hope to get down to the lunch at Hy Vee next week.  I have plans this week for lunch with a classmate.  It's so nice renewing old acquaintances.

Terry (Schultze) Braaten

June 2, 2009: Here's a note from Dick Romanowski. We've enjoyed seeing him at some recent Monday luncheons and the Moline HS Building Open House.

Hi 59ers classmates!

I have lived in this area all my life and just retired after almost 49 years working for Allied Stone Company in Milan running heavy equipment for most of the time.

Here is a picture of me standing in front of the machine I was running. I am holding a picture called a "flat stanley" sent by one of my granddaughters. She wanted me to take pictures with it.

I lost my wife just over a year ago. We had been married 48 1/2 years and had five children. I now have 15 grandchildren and I taught some of them how to fish.

5/22/09 Classmate Paul Rouse throws opening pitch at Bandits game

It was ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) night at the Bandits game.  Paul threw out the ceremonial pitch.

A card in the program has important reminders for all of us --What ALS Cannot Do

ALS is so limited...
  • It cannot cripple love
  • It cannot shatter hope
  • It cannot corrode faith
  • It cannot destroy faith
  • It cannot destroy peace
  • It cannot kill friendship
  • It cannot suppress memories
  • It cannot silence courage
  • It cannot invade the soul
  • It cannot steal eternal life
  • It cannot conquer the spirit

5/25/09 Just received this great shot complete with caption from California!

"You want looking good? Here is looking good! At Liz Livingston Hogan's home in Palo Alto, CA. Ginny Jones, Alan Larsen, Terry Hogan and Liz Livingston. All looking forward to making a command appearance at the 50th reunion in Moline."

5/11/09 Classmate Neil Olsen and his wife Carol were visiting the Q-C and joined the "Lunch Bunch" at the new Moline Hy-Vee.

They were joined by the "usuals" that attend plus some we see less frequently,
like Bill Hill, right.

5/1/09 Do you remember classmate Mike Wilder? He sent a note and these two current photos:

These shots will give you an idea of what I've evolved into. Where have those years gone?

The first was taken in Florida at Biff Burger's just sittn' on my bike pickn' an' grinnin'. The art work on my T-shirt is courtesy of my brother Tim, who lives around Tampa area. The second photo was taken up in the mountains somewhere.

Hello to all at Class of '59!

I have just been content over the years to watch from a distance, not thinking that I had anything much to offer. But I said to myself just today, what the heck; nothing ventured nothing gained, so here goes a few lines of times now past.

I have always counted myself fortunate to have been born at this period of time in the history of the world. A time of relative peace and calm, a time of being able to choose which of life's paths to follow, and not be forced to labor at tasks not of my choosing. Just to find a path that would define more completely who I really am, and thus live a life that was lived in eager anticipation of many years to come.

I remember learning to dance different steps thanks to a couple of older ladies, whose names I've long since forgotten, but will always somehow remember. Those times at the "Rec", listening to Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, Fats, Jackie Wilson, Elvis, the Platters and oh so many more.

And what's so great is that we can visit those special places anytime we wish. Just close your eyes the next time that your "Oldies" station spins your favorite disc, and remember that special person you were for that moment in time. Sock-hops during gym instead of push-ups and squat-kicks and with GIRLS no doubt. How well I remember those Basketball and Football games, yelling and screaming until our voices were gone and still wanting to yell even more, and then off to the 'Rec' to finish off the night.

Driving main street in my '38 Chevy on .18 cent gasoline. Parking in front of school along with Gibson's 35 blue coupe, Rodell's 'T and Servine's '32 Roadster and others, but space and time will not allow me to recall all. (It seems like I must have read in World Geography class about the Chinese pulling rickshaws and riding bicycles while we drove cars. We are now reading about the Chinese driving cars and that we are about to start riding bicycles and pulling rickshaws.

Seems as though there is something wrong with that picture.) Time is running short so I'll leave the remembering up to you, but those were great to remember years.

And as I review years now past, I feel that I was greatly blessed to have gone through my school years with many of you. Roosevelt Elementary, Coolidge Jr. High, the old Moline High and last but not least, the new Moline High of which we were the first models to roll off the assembly line. To hopefully somehow leave our lasting imprint for good or ill in the paths of humanity. How well each of us has done still remains to be seen. Sometime in the future, still distant, we hope our imprints large or small will have been felt and someone will have benefited by our passing by.

To close I'll recap quickly, after 4 years in the USAF, I married in 1963. We had a great 35 years together. Seven children (3 daughters and 4 sons) and 2 Indian girls for around 8 years. My wife died in 1998. I have around 18 grand kids and 5 great grand kids. I married again 6 years ago.

I ride a '98 Heritage Soft-tail Classic, about 5 years now, and I've put around 40k miles on it since. Have gone to Florida and Sturgis, Yellowstone, Missouri a couple of times, golf each week, etc. I retired in 2000 and do most anything I want. I don't ever want to work again since enjoying 36 years in the sheet metal business, but with this economy I may be greeting at a Wal-Mart near you. (Not)

I probably won't try this again anytime soon so just remember. We came into this crying and someone changing our diapers and we'll most likely leave this world crying and someone changing our diapers. Do good to those you cross paths with and remember the best is yet to come. And THE SAVIOR will RETURN...Soon. It's going to be a great future, after the Test...Are you ready?

Your classmate, Michael Wilder

3/7/09 In response to an email from Vicki, Classmate Tom Genn sent this addition and update for the "News" page.

Hello Classmates!

Having spent the past 45 years abroad, I'm not privy to what has evolved lifewise in the Quad-Cities. In fact, during this period, only two Class of 59 Moliners have crossed my path, namely Tom Bump as a U.S. Army soldier in Stuttgart (mid 60's) and the Alleman grad Pat LaCrosse (who now resides in Portland) as a tourist in Paris and again later in Vienna. You'll agree 'tis a rather scanty basis. My only source of info stems from the MHS website into which I take an occasional peek. I'm truly shocked to learn how many classmates have died already.

Should you have interest in learning about my life, I can add that my wife (an Austrian, to be precise, a Styrian lass) and I have been married for 40 years and have brought three daughters into this world. All three reside in Vienna, truly the most livable major city on earth. During this period we have worked and lived in Libya, France, the UK, Belgium, Germany and Austria. Each daughter was born in a different country. Ingrid, my wife, is a registered nurse, specialized in infants, and I was employed by AIG for the most part (I got out long before this recent meltdown), the Zürich Insurance Co and later as an independent consultant on reinsurance matters. We are both officially retired now, but we still remain active with our consulting company, a form of partnership.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I do intend to attend the MHS festivities come October.

Greetings to you from Austria!

Tom Genn
(Classmates may contact
Vicki or Nancy for Tom's email address.)

Great to hear from you, Tom! Hope others will follow your lead and send us more updates or greetings for this page. Vicki

12/27/08 We received an email note from Dorothy Fuller Booth, saying that she has enjoyed keeping up with MHS '59 via the website and Blog.

With that note, I decided maybe it was time to ressurect this "news" page and ask her and others for updates and pictures. It seems like a good time to renew acquaintances in advance of the 50th Reunion. Can others send us some new content for this page?

Send a "hello" and/or photos to [email protected] for posting.

Thanks, Vicki W

Notes from 2004 and before:

7/15/04 Our classmate Bob Vogelbaugh was mentioned as an "Everyday Hero" in a recent issue of Reader's Digest Magazine. Here is the text of the article:

POTLUCK. For 32 Novembers, Bob Vogelbaugh has offered a free community meal--for the elderly, families who have nowhere to go, college students too far from home. Vogelbaugh, dubbed Mr. Thanksgiving, insists this is not a charity dinner. "It's for anyhone who wants to share in it," he says. About 400 people show up at SouthPark Mall in Moline, Illinois, each year to help serve food and clean dishes. Dozens more make pies and salads, or give money.

Way to go, Bob!

6/22/04 Hugh Palmer is looking forward to joining us at the 45th reunion:

This photo of Hugh and his bike was taken in January 2004 in Steinhatchee, Florida, which is in the Big Bend area of North Florida.

He didn't have any particular news but said he is looking forward to the reunion and seeing everyone.

5/23/04 Barbara Fitzpatrick Burke just found our web site and wrote:

To begin with I&rsquom one of the unknowns on the MHS &ldquo59&rdquo class list. My name is Barbara &ldquoFitzpatrick&rdquo Burke, and I now live in Bradenton Florida (a coastal area between Tampa and Sarasota).  I was surprised to find a web site for our class, and enjoyed seeing the reunion pictures, etc.

We are retired, and live in a 55 and older community where the weather is great, and the living is easy.  My husband Don has taken up golfing, and I&rsquove joined a scrap book club. We don&rsquot have children, but enjoy traveling, singing in the church choir, and doing volunteer work.

I would like to attend our 45th reunion, but we leave on August 8th for a 13-day trip to Alaska. Please keep me informed of upcoming news. Thank you. Barbara Burke

3/13/04 Here's a letter we wanted to share from Ken Exline:

I retired June 5, 1999.  Carolyn and I bought a small log home on a lake about 65 due west of St. Louis.  We have 3 adult daughters and 6 grandkids.  I always told my daughter that if they gave me grandkids before I reached 65 I would disown them.  Carolyn, of course, did not agree and obviously I didn't worry my daughters - my eldest grandson turns 16 in June of this year.  As it turns out I am finding that it would have been better to start with grandkids.  They are great and I get to send them home.  I almost never tell them no and do so without any feelings of guilt.

I retired as a federal employee.  I also spent 6 years active duty Navy and followed it with an additional 28 years as an Air National Guard officer.  I retired as a Colonel.

Basically, Carolyn and I mostly occupy our time watching our clothes go out of style.  I've taken up wood working and have been building some of our furniture pieces and Carolyn does stained glass, sews and does a variety of other interesting things.

We have both lost our parents. Neither of us liked becoming orphans, but I guess it is a common occurrence with our classmates these days.  Both my brothers are still doing well.  I have no relatives in Moline.  Carolyn has an aunt and uncle there that we visit from time to time.

I appreciated viewing the website, though I was mortified to see so many of my old friends gone.   One of them, Jim Stuart, was a clinical psychologist and had earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois U. in Carbondale.   He was married twice.  His last wife, Leslie, still lives in St. Louis with their adopted Brazilian children - a boy and girl.  He also left behind an adopted daughter and a son by his first wife.  Jim was a well-respected psychologist.  His memorial was a wonderful testimony to his contribution to the well being of the people he served.  Jim was also an avid fisherman.  His interest was mainly in catfish.  He claimed his biggest was well over 30 pounds.  I never saw it, but I believed the story to be true.

You may not know that Jim and I were very close friends since about 6th grade.  It was because of him, of course, that I met his sister.  Although, he didn't encourage the relationship, I suspect he was happy that she and I got married.  We will be celebrating our 40th anniversary this year.  Ken

1959 Mardee's senior photo

Christmas 1953

Mardee and Tom, Christmas 1954... ...and trying out some mistletoe!

Tom Pope sent us this note and photos in remembrance of classmate, Mardee Melin:

Mardee was my dear friend and neighbor from age four through our school years, and throughout all these years she still called me Tommy as she did when we were young.

From the innocence of youth at four when she invited me to share a bubble bath with her, to exchanging our Christmas gifts at Lago's,  to going steady at John Deere Jr. High, to the hours and years spent together, there are so many fond memories.

In Mardee's cards and letters these past years she wrote with feelings and humor, in fact she sent my daughter a "Barney" one Summer.

Her last Christmas card dated December 2002 stated she would retire in May of 2003 and would write me a long letter. Mardee passed suddenly after her retirement..... She will be missed.

Tom Pope

Editor's note: Mardee Melin Rose, a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point ( UW-SP) Engish Professor, had just retired in May. She moved to Stevens Point in 1966 and joined the faculty at UW-SP.  She taught contemporary and comparative literature and composition. Her courses included a popular culture through films and book class.  She died at home Saturday July 19, 2003.    She was married to George F Rose in 1959 in Stevens Point. Survivors include her husband; one son George T at home, and one sister, Trudy (Larry Martel) , Moline, Il.

Here's the kind of news we like to share...

We have just learned that the Moline Logan Elementary School PTA recently recognized Tom Pope. He was given an award for his volunteer work there. His twelve year-old daughter, Danielle, has gone on to Wilson Jr. High now, but Tom continues to give much love, time and work to all the kids within the school.

His volunteer work goes well beyond his crossing guard duties. It includes helping landscape the school playground, building sets and coaching the kids in talent shows and plays, being the school Santa, working with kids in the volunteer reading program, participating in the Christmas program and much more!

Logan School loves Tom and appreciates his efforts. Tom loves making "his 150 kids" at the school smile and it is obvious that they brighten his day, as well. Congratulations, Tom!

When a fellow 1959 classmate makes a difference in the world, we'd like to share the news. Please send more stories like this for the page!

Tom and his 12 year old daughter, Danielle.

We want to thank Gary Krambeck for sending us this photo from a March 2002 trip to visit his daughter, Jill, in Australia.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge and skyline is the backdrop for this great shot of Jill, wife Barbara, and Gary.

SUSAN KUBERSKI MART - (from the Dispatch Newspaper, May 22, 2003) Headline reads: FORMER MOLINE GRAD EXHIBITING ART IN CHICAGO. Susan Mart, a graduate of Moline High School who attended Marycrest University and received her art degree from the Art Institute of Chicago, will exhibit her work at the Chicago Cultural Center during the month of August. Her medium is colored pencils, and she has shown her work at the Davenport Museum of Art and elsewhere in the Midwest. During the past five years, she has been featured in ``The Best of Colored Pencils'' three times, and she has been among the winners in the Annual Colored Pencil Society of America International Exhibit. She will be the only artist featured in the large entry room of the Chicago Cultural Center and hopes her friends in the Quad-Cities will come to see her work in August.

NONIE MOORHUSEN YOUNG - and husband Dick love life (and retirement) in Clearwater, Florida. Their son Tim was selected Visa Hall of Fame Fan for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (out of nearly 50,000 candidates). One Ultimate Fan is selected from each NFL team and is inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio in early 2003. (Nonie and Gary will attend the event!) A bonus - with the Bucs making the Super Bowl, Tim and wife Chris will be there as guests of Visa.

CURT CARLSON - retired from teaching in the Moline School System and moved to Punta Gorda, Florida. If you live or are visiting in the southwest Florida area, Curt would love to hear from you. (see Contacting Old Friends for his e-mail address)

Hello from Lee Wassenhove and wife, Vicki.
We still live in the Q-C area and yes, I still have my old '60 injected Vette. Looking forward to retirement in Jan 2005 so I can find time to restore it!

This photo was taken at the September Class of '59 cook-out by classmate Leatha Defebaugh Boyer.

Greetings to my classmates from Arizona , Betty Spore Boon & husband, Bill

Betty and Bill regret that they weren't able to attend recent class reunions, but they hope to come back for one soon. Here's an update: They sold their home in the Rocky Mts. of Colorado to travel and enjoyed a couple years on the road. Now that they've settled in AZ, retirement has been an "on again, off again" situation for each of them. Bill, a civil engineer, is busy consulting for various firms in the Phoenix area, while Betty is starting a new business venture of her own! In their free time, they both volunteer at a nursing home and Betty volunteers at an inter-city library, helping with reading skills. Kids, grandkids, and other family members in AZ and NV are also a big priority. Incidentally, Bill and Betty just celebrated their 32nd anniversary!

JIM PETERSON sent this update and a big "hello" to old friends and classmates:

I have been in Tennessee 24 years working at Murray, Inc. where I am now VP of Engineering.  My wife, Agnes and I have been married for 13 years and thoroughly enjoy our home outside Nashville.  When we have time, Agnes and I enjoy travel, antique hunting and car shows.  We enjoy driving and working on our '67 Corvette and '34 Ford.

My daughter, Debbie and husband, Jim now live in New Hampshire and have three children.  My youngest daughter, Jill and husband, Richard live in Nashville and have one daughter.
Jim Peterson

Classmate, Norm Aguirre sends greetings ! (We twisted his arm to get the first entry for this page.)

Norm is an American Kennel Club Obedience Judge and has assignments all over the United States. He is shown awarding a "high in trial" to the #1 obedience dog in the country after a flawless performance and a perfect score of 200 points.

Norm is a professional dog trainer, as well. He suggests that more 1959 classmates try dog training. It's a great way to keep both you and the dog healthy!

Other interests include GOLF and motorcycles! He owns two Hondas--a Gold Wing and a Magna!

Mel Poston, MHS '59, sent these great shots taken at the his granddaughter Jessica's graduation from University of Iowa in May 2002. Jessica is a 1998 MHS grad and was also Moline's Homecoming Queen. (No wonder Mel looks like a proud grandfather!)

Mel Poston and granddaughter, Jessica Mel, Jessica, and Mel's wife, Donna

Mel and wife Donna are still working full-time. She's at John Deere Health Plan, he's at Kars Leasing in Davenport. After two major surgeries, Mel enjoys life to the max. In addition to activities with his several grandchildren, he still loves to "party, play golf, just have fun and relax" and finds the time for vacations to Wisconsin and Myrtle Beach yearly.
