| In order for one to understand my and your plight, one must first know what an acronym is. According to The American Heritage College Dictionary, an acronym is: n. A word formed from the initial letters or parts of a word, such as PAC for political action committee. Other more common acronyms are lol for laughing out loud, brb for be right back, and asl for age sex location. At first glance these little acronyms seem nifty, neat, and helpful. But what lies beneath is a totally different story. These acronyms are destroying the very fabric of which our society is built on: culture and language. As the internet has evolved, our language has de-evolved. Acronyms have begun to subsitute large phrases. (I met someone who actually used the acronym, mhhsil: my head hurts so I'm leaving) People don't know how to spell correctly anymore. Our youth's only reason for getting A's on school reports is Microsoft brand SpellCheck. But acronyms have crossed the internet's borders and landed in our everyday, non-electronic lives. Now-a-days it is not uncommon to hear an amusing joke followed by lol's. And this cancer will continue to eat away at our culture until we stop it with non-refundable wiffle-balls. So join me and join RAA. raging against acronyms. |
