Wind Cave: August, 2003
Attending: Mark, Matt, Mike, and ?(Sorry, I forgot your name)
We all got together at about 9:00 AM, but had to wait for Matt's friend who came up from Maryland.  I can't remember his name but we found out that caving is not his thing!  Anyway, once we all got together, we headed out towards Lancaster Co., home of Wind Cave.  Wind Cave, also known as Cold Cave, is a fault cave that has several hundred feet of passages, and is a lot of fun for a beginner or an expert.  On the way, we noticed the threat of rain, but since we would be inside, we figured it wouldn't bother us.  It took about an hour from York Haven to get to the trail head, which we didn't see.  We followed the railroad tracks and used my GPS to find the cave.  It proved to be a steep hike, but more than worth it.  Anyway, we got to the cave, which was a welcome sight since its cold temperature was a relief in the hot and humid weather.  Shortly after arriving, we found out that Matt's friend wasn't into caving, as he got real light headed and pale after seeing me squeeze into a small crack. After escorting him out, Matt, Mike, and I went and explored the remainder of the cave while Matt's friend explored outside.  In about 3 hours, we had gone through the entire cave, only to come out to a downpour.  It was a blast, as you can see in the pictures below.
Here is the skylight near the entrance to Wind Cave.  Moss grows all over the walls here and walls are an amazing 17 feet high.  During warm weather, a light mist also falls here as the two air temperatures meet.
Here is a picture of the cave passage.  This is just one section.  The cave has lots of boulders all over the place as a result of its formation.  Large rocks loom overhead, but they haven't fallen in thousands of years, why would they now?
Here is Mike in a section of the cave.  Overall, this cave left a lot of room to move around, as seen in this picture.  However, there were a few smaller passages, that we had to wiggle through.
Here is Matt squeezing through a real tight space.  Matt decided to crawl through a small tunnel just to see if he could do it.  We told him he probably could and he sure enough did.  I am certain he is happy to finally see this picture!!!
