For my birthday in September, 2002, my wife decided to go caving with me as part of my present.  We went to Provo Slate Mine and then did some exploring in the surrounding area.  Overall, it was a wonderful trip and I always enjoy being with my wife anyway.  In a way, I wish we would have brought our son as he already shows interest in going caving.  Check out the pics from the trip.
Sometimes the views are better than the caves.  This was what we got to see on our way to the mine.
Here is a picture of my wife heading down into a small passage in the mine.  Several areas of the mine collapsed and created large rooms.  The mine wasn't used since the late 1910's so most of all of the relics are long since gone.  I had been to the mine many times before this trip but it is always nice to go back.
Here is my wife Katie standing in a large room.  This room had roots on the ceiling so it wasn't far from the surface.  Under 10 feet of rubble and dirt was the origional mine shaft.  The mine today has a shaft that is about 200 feet in length and then opens into rooms with small shafts heading to the sides.
Here is a passage leading out from this room.  The passage dead ends but appears to have continued at one point before it collapsed.  It would be interesting to know how much farther this mine continues under the rubble.
