Adult Learning: Theories, Principles and
Applications
This course focuses on adult development and learning theories. Students will identify the stages of adult development and examine the concept of andragogy versus pedagogy. Major theories of adult learning and how they relate to instructional practices will be explored. Intelligence, learning styles, and motivation are discussed in the context of teaching adult learners. Emphasis will be placed on teaching and learning models and strategies and effective practices in distance education.
This is the class that solidified Adult Learning Theory for me. We studied many different learning theories, and learning styles, but what stuck out most for me was Malcolm Knowles and the theory of andragogy. The concepts just make sense to me. Adults have rich life experiences, adults are internally motivated to learn, adults are self-directed, adults need information to be relevant and adults are problem solvers. These are concepts that I try to apply every day at work.
