Curlio.com interview
June 26, 2003

While on her tour of Europe with the Dixie Chicks, Michelle Branch took time out of her busy day to answer a few questions for our readers here at Curlio.com!
Do alot of your songs come from your personal experience? And if so, which song on your new album "Hotel Paper" do you think best expresses just who Michelle Branch is?
Yes. Empty Handed is my favorite song on the album, I was really proud of myself after we recorded it.
You've already had the opportunity to work with some great artists like Carlos Sanatana, Sheryl Crow, Hanson, and John Shanks, among many others. Are there any artists that you haven't worked with yet that you would really like to work with in the future?
Stevie Nicks, Jonie Mitchell, Cat Stevens even.
For so many years, Pop music has been dominated by a lot of "cut and paste" acts that have been more flash than substance. We are now starting to see more artists like you, Pink, and Lucy Woodward who take an active role in the writing and producing of their music. Do you think this will become the new trend in Pop music?
I think everything goes around and returns. Now this is whats happening I hope it continues. It works for me!!
In one of your other interviews, you had stated that you weren't really sure where the music comes from in you, and that "When I sing, I have a sense of peace... I feel connected to whatever is out there." This made me think of a concept I have often wondered about, and I am curious of your feelings on it. Music is so universal. Not only does it transcend race, age, gender and time, but it seems to extend to all living things. Its as though all music flows from a common consciousness, and the artist draws the music from this source. Is music writing like that for you?
Very much! It comes from inside of me. I never know when I will write a song. They just happen.
And of course, the Curlio.com's Silly Questions:
Which do you prefer: Dogs or cats?
Dogs, I want a beagle.
If Weird Al Yankovic (the best and most famous parody singer worldwide) wanted to do a parody of one of your songs, which song do you think it would be?
Probably Everywhere.
What's under your bed?
Nothing. I am weird about that.
What fruit would you absolutely NOT want to be?
A tomato not a fan.
