WESTIE INFORMATION
The West Highland White Terrier or Westie as they are referred to are usually 10 - 12 inches tall with a white course wiry coat. They are not usually barkers but it depends on whether they are disciplined or not. You do not need a huge yard to have a Westie but if you do only have a small yard they would appreciate a good walk every day not that they wouldn't like one anyway. Westies in general are an outgoing breed that enjoy having you around but are quite capable of amusing themselves. They have a endearing expression that will appeal to just about every one add to that there cheeky ways and quirky mannerisms and they are a great dog for just about everyone.
The West Highland White Terrier's origins are some what uncertain it is believed that they were developed by crossing the Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier but like their very close relatives the Cairn Terrier there history is somewhat uncertain. What is known is that when the Cairn Terrier breed was some what established the white ones in their litters were culled at birth until Col. Malcom of Poltaloch shot one of his prized coloured hunting dogs. The white dogs were then kept and over time they have become a pure white breed leaving the colour to their cousins the Cairns. However in Cairn litters today you still get the occasional very light dog that shows their relation to the Westie and like wise with the Westies you will get one with the occasional patch of darker hair.

GROOMING
The Westie contrary to popular belief is a breed that is relatively easy to keep clean. A brush through with baby powder will keep them looking and smelling clean. You will have to occasionally bath them as with most dogs but it should not be done to often as this will dry out their skin. If you just own a pet you will probably find it easier to have them clipped off, most grooming parlours will do this. In the case of a show dog their are many things to learn and far too much to go over here but in general the coat must be hand plucked and this is an art within it's self. If you have a show dog and are looking to learn how to groom I suggest you either contact your breeder or send us an email and we'll try to help out.
