PC Softball Games Review

My system basics: P850MHz, 128MB Ram, 32MB Geforce2 MX video card, Win98.

My overall pick is to take Sammy Sosa's version. This game is great fun and is way closer to resembling a real softball game than the TPS version. I do DEFINITELY recommend getting the Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad (around $20) for this game as you can use all of the buttons available rather than using the keyboard. The gamepad makes a huge difference in gameplay !

Sammy Sosa Softball Slam

HIGHS
-----
1/1 count optional
control pitch location
align outfielders and have a short fielder
change player appearance and type
pitcher/batter interface close to real life
batter can slide up to hit the ball
can swing high, reg, low
wind effects the flight of the ball
4 or 8 team tourney
6 different very unique fields
day/night games
2 different batter views, high and low
ability to hit where you want (backside, etc)
has a family mode for kids
mens teams, womens teams, co-rec
errors can be turned on or off
players use either an aluminum or wood bat
wacky announcer
good graphics
game has speed settings, next batter comes up quick, dont have to wait on runner to run out HR, etc

LOWS
------
no regular season
uniforms aren't the way players look today
all hr's go about the same distance
can't turn off power throw
when using low batter view - lose sight of the ball temp in a high arc pitch - which forces you to use the high view
players always run and throw awkwardly (they did this intentionally)
pitcher can't 'pump fake'
wacky announcer gets old after awhile (you can turn it off)
not a whole lot of appearance difference between night and day games
big ball/player underscore on where ball is and who has the ball, would like to see it optional
no way to save stats for an extended period of time

TPS City League Softball
This game may have more than one title. Look for anything TPS or Louisville as I would say they aren't going to make 2 different softball games (lucky to have 1) !

This game was lacking in many areas. The batter/pitcher interface where you need to start swinging way before you would in real life. You can hit a lot of HR's in a game, but that is upsetting as each HR is run out at a slow pace by the batter making for a long game. You cannot change the 'tempo' of the game like you can in Sammy Sosa.

TPS is a more serious attempt at a softball game. It has potential but without a solid grasp of the basics the game falls short. You can setup nice uniforms for your team and the HR's look great and it even lists the distance you hit them.

The game is cheap enough that if you want to give it a shot anyway, then go ahead, but I definitely recommend Sammy over TPS.
