It's June!!! The best month
of the year!
Somehow it took me all week to "come back" from holidays, even though I
was working and doing stuff. I haven't managed to catch up with Susan yet
or phone my mum.
After a very cold night on Monday I also caught a cold, but it is already
better.
A couple of days ago, I
heard a commotion in the garden, animals squealing very loudly, so I
opened the door and saw a black cat run away. I thought two cats had been
fighting, but it had actually been a fight between the cat and a bird: a
fledgling black bird - its mother was making quite a racket trying to
chase the cat away, very impressive. The baby bird looked rather tattered,
but I couldn't see if he was injured because it was already getting dark.
I went back in the house and when I returned I could find him anymore, so
I assumed either the cat had eaten him or he was alright enough to hobble
away.
But 2 days later I saw him again. He was obviously injured, a broken or
dislocated leg or wing. But he couldn't have any internal injuries,
otherwise he would have been very poorly. I tried to get closer, but he
attacked me and hopped away and hid. I had to go to work, so I left him
there.
When Stephen and I came back in the evening, the bird was still there. I
decided I had to do something, because a bird that can't fly -- even if
it's still learning -- has no real prospect in life, and he was right
there on my door step!
We caught him and put him in a box in the kitchen. I phoned a local
wildlife shelter and they said I could take him around the next morning.
"Have you fed him?", the man asked, but sadly I didn't happen to have any
cat food or fishing maggots in the house at that moment. We had fed the
bird a small worm, but earth worms are apparently toxic and
shouldn't be given to birds! There's always something to learn! LOL
The next morning I was woken at 5 because the little bird was calling and
flapping excitedly. It was breakfast time. It was likely that his parents
were still feeding him, otherwise he would have starved after so many
days. So I put the box outside in the garden. It took about 1 minute until
a grown-up blackbird arrived with food! After a couple of sceptical sniffs
at the box, he jumped in and fed the baby. Very good!
In order to make the appointment with the animal shelter at 10:30 I had to
take the bird with me to work. I went at 8 to make up with any lost time
and then took a cab from work. The shelter person fed the baby bird a box
of maggots and said they'll take care of him and he'll be fine. So there!
I left them pounds of donations.
After spending about 50 pounds on a bloody blackbird I now really see no
point in ever eating chicken again! I just wouldn't make sense. LOL |
