Excellent article about panda bears: They only eat bamboo sprouts which basically means they are destroying their own livelihood by exterminating the plants they live on. Bamboo sprouts also contain high levels of hydrocyanic acid, which panda's funnily enough do not tolerate very well. They end up being lethargic and ill most of their time! And they don't breed. Apparently they used to be carnivores about 8 million years ago, but then evolution 'decided' to let them feed solely on poisonous bamboo... Looks like they are trying to become extinct. So why don't we let them be? (in brandeins 12/2005) |
