WHAT IS MOHAWK RADIO?
Old-style radio microphone
THE STORY BEHIND THE SHOW GOES BACK TO 1969, WHEN I GREW TIRED OF THE REPETITIOUS WAY POPULAR RADIO WAS BEING HANDLED BY THE SO-CALLED "MAINSTREAM STATIONS".  IN THOSE DAYS, RADIO WAS STUCK HEAVILY IN THE "TOP 40" FORMAT.

ACTUALLY, TO BE FRANK, THEY WERE MORE LIKE "TOP 15", AND LOCAL RADIO RULES SEEMED PRETTY MUCH STUCK IN THE PATTERN THAT THE TOP 10 HITS HAD TO BE PLAYED AT LEAST 3 TIMES IN AN HOUR.  THIS LED TO A LOT OF REPETITION, BUT THERE WAS ONE SALVAGING AND REDEEMING THING.
1961 WABC 77 AM Jocks Promo
The DJ's (or "Jocks", as they were known, were incredibly energetic and were encouraged to be as wild as they could be on the air.  This was epitomised by New York City station WABC, AM 77,which became the most listened to station in the country.

While opening dialogue with friends and people in general, I found out that although the jocks were very well received by the public, the constant repetition of music was thought to be annoying, so in order to counter that, I bought a small transmitter from Radio Shack and began doing shows for the people in my apartment complex in 1969.

While I certainly didn't have the audience or wide appeal of the jocks at WABC, I had the  advantage of being the "local boy", and when my show was on, most of my neighborhood tuned me in.  Eventually, this led to other gigs like weddings and parties, and I got a series of jobs at small radio stations.

In the late 90's, I went on a national tour that included stops in Phoenix, Evansville (Indiana), Gallup (New Mexico), and New York City.  This gave me great exposure, and by the time I hit KTSTfm in Tustin, CA, I had galvanised much of my old audience back into my fold as the station went to the Internet.  My goal is to give my fans the best variety of music, news, talk, editorials, and movie reviews so that anyone can enjoy the show, whether they prefer The Platters or Def Leppard.

I sometimes get asked why I don't play just Native American music since I am Mohawk.  If I did that, I would be catering to one set of fans only, and that's not what I'm about.  I want everyone to enjoy The Mohawk Radio Show, so I infuse it with as much variety as possible.  Until we're back on the air, don't be afraid to get in touch with me and share your views or make a song request at [email protected].
