| We are sure being loved by a Chihuahua is an experience you will enjoy. If loved in return, and well cared for, your Chihuahua will be a good friend and faithful companion for many years. Take the puppy to your Veterinarian to have its health checked and to set up a vaccination schedule. You should keep a high quality dry puppy food available at all times, since many Chihuahua puppies snack throughout the day. The breeder may have given you a sample of the brand of food the puppy is currently eating. ( We use Purina Pro Plan) The breeder may also suggest; that in addition to the dry, you feed a small amount of canned puppy food 3-4 times a day, especially if puppy is not eating the dry very well. You may even want to add a bit of warm water to the dry food to soften it if puppy is having trouble chewing it. You should always make changes in your dog's diet slowly, to avoid any digestive upsets. Please keep fresh water available at all times. It is VERY IMPORTANT that your PUPPY EAT, this cannot be emphasized strongly enough! Chihuahuas are small and usually don't eat large amounts of food at once, they play hard and can quickly become very sick with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), if they do not eat. Do not let your puppy go long periods, such as all day or even all night without eating. Your puppy should eat a little while before going to bed. If the puppy seems afraid or is having problems adjusting to its new home and won't eat, pet it, hold it, talk to it gently, and encourage it to eat; you may even have to put a small amount of food in its mouth. What it boils down to is that, IT MUST EAT! Keep your puppy out of drafts, Chihuahuas like to be warm, this is more so in the smooth coats than the long. Your puppy will need to rest and sleep just as any baby does, try not to let him/her get over-tired. We recommend latex toys and pig ears to chew on... puppies chew a lot when cutting teeth. DO NOT use wicker beds, they can splinter, and if swallowed, could puncture the stomach. Dog treats are also fine for your puppy, just be careful to give small pieces to prevent any choking hazards. If you do not buy your puppy as a SHOW QUALITY DOG that you plan to show, PLEASE consider having him/her neutered/spayed. There are many reasons why you should consider the surgery before six months old or as directed by your Veterinarian. Just a few that I can think of right off the bat are... 1.You reduce the risks of Testicular Cancer in males, and Uterine or Mammary Cancers in females. 2. Males neutered before 6 months of age ordinarily do not mark or urinate on the furniture. 3. One of the biggest reasons...there are already too many unwanted dogs in the world! A breeder has an obligation to take back every dog you allow to be born for the life of that animal, NO EXEPTIONS! |
