| Why The Dead Girl? opened up proceedings this evening and blew away any 'haven't heard this before' preconceptions by putting on a striking performance. Their pure indie rock made a previously sanguine audience suddenly attentive as the lead singer pranced, gestured and hammered out tune after tune It could have led to a let down as next band Veda took the stage second but fortunately though they may not have been the same style, some quality musicianship and highly personla frontmanship by the lovely Natalie made them immediately close contenders. As if it couldn't get any hotter, next band Mogul came sweeping in like a baking wind from the plains of Central Asia, firing of a performance filled with sizzling energy and passion. The group who have been impressing audiences since their debut only last autumn have some quality tunes which as any A and R man will tell you, is the basis for any success. Finally UXB had the almost impossible job of following the last three. Although they lacked some of the pyrotechnics of Why The Dead Girl and Mogul, their performance was solid and made many people chuckle with their cover of The Blood Hound Gang's The Bad Touch. The atmosphere was such that the crowd wouldn't shuttup as I read out the thankyous, but seemed content with the result. Winner: Mogul |
