The European cycling championship of the deaf.

Took place in the Czech Republic between 16th and 24th September 2000. Competitors from Estonia, Germany, Italy, Moldavia, Russia and Czech Republic did four races all together in Lidice and its surrounding. Sprint - 1000m, criterion - 50 km, time race of individuals - 25 km and road 100 km.

But a tragic event happened in this Championship. During the time race of individuals a van knocked down nineteen years old
German representative.

Florian Gobel is not among us any more

but he will stay in our memories!

German competitors did not start at the last competition. A mourning convoy of all the participants went to the place of the accident on Saturday.
Competitors including organizers, referees, deputies for European organisation of deaf sportsmen and Czech union of deaf sportsmen put flowers at the place of the tragic event. (Between Hrebec and Hostoun villages.)

The guilt is clearly on a driver of the white van who did not care about a traffic sign "No vehicles" even with an additional note saying the reason of closing the road and exact time of duration. He went round an iron barrier and continued on closed racing road. On top of that he did not even react on organizer's instructions who went in front of the competitor.

Lets think about this tragedy and realise that a car is becoming a deadly weapon.
Human arrogance and total absence of sense of an order brought death to an innocent!
