PEOPLE ARE DEAD is a movie about a group of disconnected people all being brought together by a string of awkward events in post-tragedy Manhattan. First there is the body-snatcher (MIA TYLER) who is snatching up bodies off the streets of New York. No one knows exactly what she is doing with these bodies, especially the two cops assigned to find her (STEEPLES, PAT McNOLTE). Across town a depressed Broadway actress (ANGELA BETTIS) has a reunion with her old friend (TASHA GUEVARA) and there is some awkward tension about the distance that is clearly now between them. Angela's boyfriend, a neurotic, self-proclaimed suicidal filmmaker (KEVIN FORD) captures the women's reunion for his new movie. Meanwhile, to lift his own spirit out of the gutter, Kevin visits his paranoid best-friend (CINQUE LEE) and asks him to be a part of the film he is making. Cinque is too wrapped up in his own thoughts, believing that people are after him because he knows too much about our government. And he may be right.
How do all these different characters ultimately affect one another? What happens to lift all of them out of their various ruts and how do they find the desire to live again? As suggested by the title, PEOPLE ARE DEAD is about humans who have already given up on life while still in the thick of it. Especially after the hard times that have changed New York, the movie looks for a hint of optimism and a clue to what really does give us the freedom to move forward. PEOPLE ARE DEAD is a slice of contemporary New York life, but not the high-brow kind that is seen so often... this movie is about the people in the background, the alleys, and the subways who just feel stuck. Yes, people are dead, but they can and will live again...
