Exercise That Really Does Make A World Of Difference |
|
|
|
This is a high stress society. No one really takes the time to enjoy life anymore. Most people are too busy paying bills, going to school, and working. Yoga helps people deal more effectively with the hectic paced world. However, trying to find a yoga class in this area only heightens the stress levels. I feel that the YMCA has an obligation to provide more yoga classes for its members. |

The reason I feel yoga is important is because it helps people deal with life. Yoga can help people manage their anxiety, stress, asthma, blood pressure, or whatever ails them. It opens up people and allows them to see another side of themselves and another side to life. Many people want a toned and muscular physique. Yoga allows them to achieve that goal and helps them become more aware of themselves in the process. Some of the surface benefits from yoga are flexibility, strength, increased stamina, and improved circulation. However, there are more benefits achieved through yoga that cannot be made on a treadmill. |

There are many branches of yoga, but each one is headed toward the same goal. The goal is to reach true happiness, liberation, and become enlightened. Each branch has its strong points, and each branch fits a different person. The choice of what kind of yoga to practice is a personal choice. According to yogasite.com, the different yogis seem to vary in the alignment of the body, coordination of breath and movement, holding the postures, and the flow from one posture to another. There are 12 different kinds of yogis. It is important to have choices, because one type of yoga may not work for one person, but another type might fit them to a tee. The three major styles are Ashtanga, Iyengar and Viniyoga. Most gyms offer only one class and one type of yoga. I think that is absurd. It is like offering only treadmills at the gym. People need a variety to choose from, and then they can figure out which is best for them. |

The YMCA in Hampton offers one yoga class. It has been generically labeled as yoga, so people do not even know which kind they are taking. The class also fills up at an unreal rate. It is filled a week before the class even meets. If people want to take the yoga class, then they have to rearrange their schedule. First they have to make sure they are there a week in advance to sign up. And Tuesday night at 6pm, must fit into their schedule. I think it would be obvious to the fitness director that people enjoy yoga. The one class is like a tease. The YMCA can advertise that they offer yoga, but getting into the class is like winning a raffle. The Y has offered yoga on a more regular basis, but members had to pay an additional fee to take the class. I feel that if you belong to a gym, then your work out needs should be accommodated. |

Yoga is not some frivolous form of exercise. At the YMCA yoga is treated like an extra. Yoga is much more beneficial than weight training, and stair masters. It encompasses the mind, body and spirit. Many people can participate in yoga classes. For example, an older person who has not exercised in years can benefit greatly from yoga, while the work out manic will also gain something from yoga. Yoga is like therapy in exercise form. Walking out of a yoga class feels amazing. I remember walking out of my classes at ODU feeling relaxed, calm, and stretched. I felt free from all my burdens, and I was a much happier person. I do not know one person who would not gain something from yoga. |

My proposal is to add more class to already existing gyms. The YMCA has an obligation to its members to offer classes the members want. The number of people rejected every week from the yoga class is proof that people are interested in yoga. The reason that there are not enough classes offered could be because of the unavailability of the aerobics room. My solution for that is to build another room. The Daily Press donated the aerobics room, and I think another corporation would donate a room for yoga classes. Members of the YMCA should not have to make do with what is offered. I feel members should have choices for kinds of yogis, and also more chances to take classes. If classes were offered on the weekend mornings, I think many people would participate. It is not fair to penalize those who cannot be there on Tuesday nights. |

According to the yoga site, "Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, and shape up all at the same time." There is no other exercise that reaps the benefits like yoga does. If you have an ailment, yoga will help in some way. Members of the YMCA should not be confined to one class a week. Some solutions to the problem are adding a new room and offering more classes. The YMCA's philosophy is to create better minds, bodies, and spirits through exercise. I do not know of any other exercise that encompasses all those qualities better than yoga. |
