The Sandlot is based in the early 1960's. The main character, Scotty Smalls, is the new kid on the block, and he isn?t quite sure how he will make friends. He would rather work on his erector set than enjoy the endless, outdoor, summer days. After a talk with his mother, he decides to follow some boys to their local hangout, the sandlot. |

Throughout the summer the boys bond over the classic game of baseball. Every day they venture down to the sandlot for a game. They are not a real team, but the love of the game keeps them united. Unless the hot weather is unbearable, they remain loyal to each other, and to the game of baseball. |

One day the game is cut short because Benny cracks the baseball open. No one has any money to buy a new ball, so they are all bummed that they can't play ball. Smalls does not want the day' fun to be over, so he says that he has a ball at home. The group encourages him to run home and get it. The ball is signed by Babe Ruth, and Smalls, who lacks in his sports knowledge, does not realize the great value of the ball. He brings it back to the sandlot, and they begin to play ball. After the first pitch has been made, Smalls hits a home run, and the balls flies right over the fence. The problem is the beast lives on the other side of the fence, and anything that goes over the fence stays there, forever! |

The Sandlot may not be an award winner, but it is a feel-good movie. Throughout the movie I was transported back to my youth, I and remembered my fun and endless summer days. A review by James Berardinelli stated, As is frequently the case when we look back on our past, events are tinged with a pleasant glow that leaves behind only the better parts of the memories. This is the feel that The Sandlot strives for. I think Berardinelli is right on target. The characters seem to have a universal appeal. I think that most people would see themselves in one of the characters and their friends in the others. By the end of the movie, I felt I had grown up with these boys. |

I absolutely love The Sandlot! The chemistry between the boys sends me right back to my youth. The film helps bring back the innocence of childhood. The writers, directors, and actors capture children's minds. Where everything is a little bigger, time seems a little longer, and small events or life changing. So if you are feeling nostalgic for your childhood, plan to stay in, and relive it with The Sandlot. |
