  1. Questions during the reading:
    1. Why will Joy the bird not stay at the mountain?
    2. Why is the mountain so sad Joy will have to leave?
    3. Do you think Joy will return each year?
    4. Why does the mountain start to cry?
    5. Why can a seed grow on the mountain but it never could before?
    6. What does the mountain look like after everything starts growing?
    7. Why do you think Joy carries a stick to the mountain?
    8. Do you think Joy will be happy living at the mountain?
  1. Students have 30 minute to make their own "mountain."
  2. Have students collect materials from outside, such as rocks, grass, twigs, etc. Then, have students build and create their own "mountain" out of these materials. Let students decide what animals should live on the mountain and what materials will be needed on the mountain for the animal to survive.

  3. Students will research different mountains from around the world.

Have students research different types of mountains from around the world. Instruct them to look up what kinds of animals live on these mountains. Have them get there research from the Internet, the library, and by asking others. After they do their research, they should get into groups and talk about the different mountains they have discovered and the information they found about the mountains.
