Throughout history, mankind measured itself with mythology and creatures more powerful than itself.  Amongst the gods were the chimera, creatures made up from more than one ordinary creature:  mermaids, centaurs, naga, medusae, unicorns, etc.

Nowadays, in this era of science, mankind has a new type of mythology:  Superheroes.  Whether rocketing from other planets or bitten by radioactive bugs, irradiated by space rays or coming from a mystical island, they are no less powerful than the creatures of old.

This is a blending of the two.
