Scots in the founding of the Yukon & Northwest Territories

The Scots contributed heavily to the opening of the Canadian Artic.

In 1834 Scot John McLeod reached the headwaters of the Sitkine River and in 1838 Robert Campbell discovered the upper parts of the Yukon.

Scot John Bell established Fort McPherson on the Peel River

Scot Alexander Hunter Murray built Fort Yukon in 1847.

Thomas Simpson and John Rae, both Scots employed by the Hudson’s Bay Company, completed the survey of the Artic coastline between 1837 and 1854.

George M Dawson made the pioneer geological surveys of the Yukon and later directed the Geological Survey of Canada.  Dawson City is named after him.

The Government of John A MacDonald created the famous Northwest Mounted Police.
