Scots in the founding of Alberta

In 1795 William Tomison, a native of Scotland, began the building of the city of Edmonton.

Calgary was founded in 1875 as a fort for the Northwest Mounted Police by Col. James F. MacLeod, who named the place after his wife’s hometown on the Island of Mull.  A statue of Robert the Bruce looks out on the downtown.

In 1905 Scot Alex Rutherford became Alberta’s first premier and at least 5 other Scots have followed him.
