| NO TRUCKMAN! EDINBURGH CASTLE HOTEL, 19/2/2004 New Brisbane band "No Truckman" burst onto the scene last night in a blaze of glory at the Edinburgh Castle Hotel. This young four piece has been commanding attention based purely on reputation, and last night was their first chance to display their wares to the public. A modest crowd was in attendance when Truckman kicked off their set with a cover of a song good mates Shutterspeed have consigned to the back catalogue, "Atmosphere In Here". It was an interesting take on a number that used to be a crowd fave for Shutters a few years back. The punters were taken aback when truckman followed this up with ANOTHER Shutterspeed song, this time "Come Out Swingin", the first single from "Custom Made Hit Parade". Was this about to turn into a tribute night? Lord no, said Truckman, as the boys reeled of "Why?", a Style Council meets The Faces type number. I must apologise that I can't recall most song titles from the night, only to say that one reminded a lot of Hourly Daily era You Am I. The standout tracks were definitely "Gets That Way" and "Long Way To Go", the latter trying to nudge it's way into my brain as we speak. It truly was something special. I only wish I could have the chance to hear it again, but alas, last night was also the final public appearance of No Truckman, an absolute travesty in this reviewer's mind. The good do indeed die young... The band finished with a couple more Shutterspeed covers, before calling it a night. I consider myself priveleged to have been a part of No Truckman's career. It was an all too fleeting glimpse of greatness. Negotiations are currently under way for Shutterspeed management to buy the songwriting catalogue of No Truckman, so you may hear the Shutters boys doing the odd Truckman cover at the upcoming gigs. One can only hope they can do the Truckman justice. |
