Steve playing as John Entwistle
It was always going to be a special night. We were still reeling from the shock of losing The Ox the night before. We decided to go along to The Cauliflower to try and connect with others who cared as much as we did.
The place was absolutely packed. I remember when it used to be a real "Rockers'" pub and would rarely venture in! Still needs must and all that!
The band came on just after ten, to shouts of "Who are ya?"
They called for a minute's silence as a mark of respect for John Entwistle, it looked like it wasn't going to work at first and then all of a sudden, a silence fell. You could almost hear the traffic outside, it was so well observed.
As the last seconds ticked away the suspense was almost too much to bear, a hugely relieved crowd let go of an almighty roar and the boys began to play.
I was going to write down the set list, but to be honest, I was so into the whole gig that it just didn't seem important.
What did matter, though, was that Who's Who, a tribute band, really did pay tribute tonight. They did themselves proud. Everybody was really up for a good gig, and we got exactly what we wanted.
I have to especially mention a couple of tracks that were stunning - Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Riley, Bell Boy and Can You See the Real Me?
These were simply fantastic. Pinball Wizard was a treat and  My Wife was pretty cool.
For anyone not in the know, Who's Who have undergone a couple of changes recently. There is a new lead singer, Gary who has fitted in perfectly. The only tiny problem being that his mike seemed to be a bit lower than everything else. We know you have a top voice Gary, let's hear it.
This was also Steve Nelson's (bass) last gig. Officially it should have been the night before at the 100 Club (which was a pretty good gig, but a much less enthusiastic audience), but because of The Ox's death and Steve's gratitude for Entwistle's inspiration and example, he played one last time to say "Goodbye"
Steve, it was a pleasure to watch you work the bass in the style that we have grown to admire over the few occasions we have watched you. You did him proud, mate.
Good luck in your new project. (Keep your eyes peeled for
jane air at Camber Sands!)
The boys went off to shouts of "More!" and we really did want them back! They finished off with My Generation which had us all bouncing and singing along. A fantastic night, more than I expected in all ways.
When it was all over, there were no tears shed, as I realised that although we have lost one of
The Greats, we are lucky enough to have the legacy of his music.
Thanks John.
