Small Faces Convention

This is an annual event in its seventh year, a gathering of bands paying tribute to East Londons favourite sons, The Small Faces. I gather its always a popular event & tickets get snapped up very quickly. I found The Ruskin Arms horribly perfect; the stage area was the right size to create a good atmosphere. There was an adequate beer garden & the main bar doubled as a mini market selling Small Faces memorabilia. I arrived in just enough time to mingle before The Boss took to the Stage. I was a bit nervous how the boys would go down as they had a very early slot and they were new to the event.
As the band took the stage the room started to fill, the Boss diehards: Joe, Rachel, Maz, Robbie & Zoe gathered nervously; all wondering, like myself, how the crowd would react. We didnt have to wait long as they exploded into Sha-la-la-la-lee followed by Understanding. All of my apprehension vanished as they belted out My Minds Eye, Get Yourself Together & the excellent Tin Soldier. Danny & the boys were loving it as were the rapidly growing crowd. We were then treated to my personal favorite, Son Of A Baker.
Whilst the band paused for breath, they were joined on stage by the eleven-year-old nephew of Steve Marriott, who confidently took over vocals to Happy Days Toy Town. Needless to say it went down a storm!
The boys started to wrap up proceedings with their own 100-mile an hour rendition of Hey Girl and left they crowd baying for more after Whatcha Gonna Do About It. After a slight pause, The Boss encored with the classic All or Nothing (with added vocals from Rob) which left a small group of women to the left of the stage very emotional.
A blinding set from a band that really loves what they do. The thunderous applause at the end of the show was truly deserved. by Uncle Fester
