Bible Thumping
And God's name is smack for some.
As I wander aimlessly about this campus, around this city, and across this
country, they are never far away. You can always find one, no matter how
little you want to. The are easily identifiable. They where the cool
T-shirts, quoting scripture and the like. Telling me that I'm going to
hell. Or they are at the ball game, with their clown wig, and the John
3:16 sign.
Now, it seems to me, that if they are happy with themselves, and their
relationship with the Creator, why the hell do they need to advertise. I
mean, we're not talking about a soft drink here, or a popular vacation hot
spot. There aren't many choices out there, so there is no need to make a
sale.
Which brings me to my point. Simply put, organized religion is nothing
but politics. Why else would you feel the need to let everyone know your
beliefs, except to possibly give them a better opinion of you? If you had
to go to church and cloaks, and noone knew who went or not, would everyone
still go?
As it has been through out history, attending church is nothing but a way
of self promotion. Most of the people affiliated with it are more crooked
than politicians. Televangelists, ministers -- all after money, and an
easy living. Think about it, how many of them are putting in 40 hours a
week for the comfortable 40 to 50 thousand dollars subsidized living? All
one has to do is look back in a history book to see the evidence. The
Catholic Church had more illegal things going than the Mafia. Every Pope
that came through was a greedy son of a bitch.
Now, with a little simple logic, the point becomes clear. If they were
that crooked in the 15 and 1600's, when people were basically good, what
can possibly lead a person to believe that they have improved now, in the
midst of the most decandent society ever to tread on this planet.
But, even with this point quite obvious, many would still believe. Not
because they want to, but because they have no choice. Because faith is
like a drug. All most everyone alive needs that something to get them
through their day, that crutch. For some, it's a joint, for other's, a
beer. Some people obsessively look at porn, some choose to become
workaholics. And yet, for others, religion is the choice. They don't
just believe, the obsess. Every piece of chance or luck is an act of God.
If I win the Lotto, or fail my Statistics test, it's all a part of His
Divine plan. It's a sick addiction, something they can't go without,
because in this society, that lacks much to believe in, some people need
something. They need to feel that there is some omnipotent presence, to
whom our existence makes sense. They need to know we are not alone.
Now, I'm not going to say that the church is all bad, or that religion is
fiction. I do believe many good things come from the church. It instills
values in families, and children, that, at least in some cases, allows
decent human beings to exist. For instance, there aren't many pimps
hanging out at the local cathedral.
But, for the most part, religion is meant to be a private matter. If a
person believes in one Creator, or several, it is their personal task to
seek him/her/them out, and make peace with them, and no amount of pushing
or prodding is going to help them. Sidewalk preachers do more damage then
they do good. And if they choose not to believe, that is their choice,
and whose to say they aren't right. Let these people become scientists,
and maybe discover a cure for HIV, or a bubble gum that doesn't lose it
flavor. We need people like that to. As for my opinion on Divinity, and
Christianity, and Judaism....that's my opinion, for me to cipher out on my
own, and live with my decision.
